Rayne A have won the Braintree Table Tennis League title for the first time in 19 years.

They wrapped it up with two matches still to play by beating their own B team 7-3 to reach 130 points, a total reigning champions Netts A could no longer reach despite their 10-0 win over the same team.

Rayne’s win against their B team was achieved with only two players, as was their next win, 6-4 over Liberal B. Paul Lucas and Maria Boulton won all seven against the B team while Adam Buxton was undefeated against Liberal B.

Netts A had earlier beaten Sudbury Nomads 6-4.

Rayne C have held on to third place despite a thumping 8-2 reverse at the hands of Black Notley B, where Kaung Paing was unbeaten for Notley.

They redeemed themselves in their next match, a 6-4 win over Nomads with the help of three wins from Steve Pennell.

Liberal B remain in fourth place after a 9-1 win over their own C team. A further 9-1 defeat, this time to their own A team, confirmed Liberal C’s relegation.

In fifth, Nomads wrapped up their season with a 9-1 win over Rayne B where Ken Lewis and Aron Jordan were undefeated.

Notley B, who are finishing their season with a flourish, could overtake them after wins of 6-4 over Liberal A and 9-1 over Liberal C.

Notley A, well behind on their fixtures, look to have escaped the next-to-bottom slot. They had a good 6-4 win over Liberal A, where reserve Rev Matthews joined Steve Noble and Neil Freeman on two wins.
