England’s top Cadet and Junior players are competing at the European Youth Championships in Gondomar, Portugal. With the completion of the team event, stay up to date with the results from the individual competitions below.

Cadet Girls
Group Stage

Kicking the day off early, saw each of the Cadet Girls in action in the opening of two group matches they would play. Alyssa Nguyen came from 2-1 down to win her opener against Azerbaijan’s Yaghmur Mammadli, but despite come from 2-0 down in her second match against Greece’s Anastasia Michalarou, she wasn’t able to convert the third in a row and ultimately lost the decider. Soraya Rahmani-Walentynska saw off Carolina Rossi of Italy 3-1 in her opener, and later in the day, came from 1-0 down to win 3-1 over Sweden’s Alicia Enbom. Hannah Saunders didn’t have the same result in her first match of the singles competition, as she fell 3-0 to Daria Kharlova.

On the second day of action, the group stages came to a close with all three players taking wins in their final group matches. Alyssa Nguyen shook off her previous loss to defeat Italy’s Nora Cattazzo 3-0. Soraya Rahmani-Walentynska made light work of Greece’s Anthi Toulia to also win 3-0, and Hannah Saunders made it a trio of wins in her 3-1 victory over Denmark’s Sofie Jorgensen.

Friday 17 July
Knockout Round of 128
All three girls started in the Round of 128, and Alyssa Nguyen finished her match first. She beat Hungary’s Borbala Vass in straight sets to win 4-0. Soraya Rahmani-Walentynska finished next after coming from 1-0 to beat Israel’s Maya Levin 4-1. Hannah Saunders also progressed but only after a battle with Italy’s Matilde Buzzoni. It went all the way to a decider, which Saunders came out the better of to make it through with her compatriots.

Knockout Round of 64
Alyssa Nguyen bowed out at the R64 as she lost 4-2 to Adela Brhelova (CZE). Nguyen conceded the first two games before securing the next two to equalise at 2-2. Losing the fifth, Nguyen was then edged out 12-10 in the sixth. Hannah Saunders lost by the same score to Aleksandra Nawrocka (POL). Like her compatriot, Saunders lost the first two games before winning the third. She then lost the fourth game, but bounced back to win the fifth 12-10 to bring the match score back to 3-3 however lost a tight sixth game 11-9. The closest of the three matches to feature English players, Soraya Rahmani-Walentynska lost 4-3 to Zsófia Fegyver (HUN). Having led the match 2-0, Rahmani-Walentynska was pegged back as her opponent drew level at 2-2. A tight fifth game saw her re-establish her lead as she took it 14-12, yet lost the remaining two games to lost 4-3

Cadet Boys
Group Stage

The first two matches of the group stages took place on day one, with widespread success from the Cadet Boys across the board. Dimitar Dimitrov was 2-1 down after conceding the second and third 13-11 each, but won 3-2 over Latvia’s Kirils Demsovs, before later defeating Elias Skajem of Denmark in the afternoon. Oscar Nikolli got off to a flying start in his opening two matches, both of which finished 3-0. He defeated Spiros Fousekis (Greece) and Richard Feber Jr (Czechia). Pablo Ramirez Rioja also started well, winning his opener over Authorised Neutral Athlete Artem Stankevich, finishing that one 3-0, and in his final singles match of the day, he ensured a clean sweep for the boys as he won 3-0 over Montenegro’s Milan Vucetic.

With one final group match to play for each of the boys, Oscar Nikolli got the ball rolling with this third 3-0 win of the groups over Finland’s Eetu Makela. Dimitar Dimitrov also made it three wins from three as he beat Scotland’s Dean Robertson 3-1. Pablo Ramirez Rioja also finished his group on a high after beating Italy’s Pietro Andreoli 3-1.

Friday 17 July
Knockout Round of 128
Pablo Ramirez Rioja progressed to the Round of 64 at a canter as he beat Denmark’s Zacharias Al Moalem 4-0.

Knockout Round of 64
Oscar Nikolli defeated Simon Zsigmond (HUN) 4-1 to make his way into the R32. Having lost the opening game 4-11, Nikolli bounced back to win the next four games 11-6, 11-5, 14-12, 14-12.Dimitar Dimitrov and Pablo Ramirez Rioja were both knocked out at the R64 stage to Nolan Johnston (FRA) and Louis Fegerl (AUT) respectively. Having taken the first game, Ramirez Rioja lost the next three to see himself 3-1 down. This sparked a comeback to see him draw level at 3-3 before succumbing in the final game 11-9. Dimitar Dimitrov went down 4-1 in his R64 match. Losing the first three games, he got one on the board to make it 3-1 before losing the final game.

Knockout Round of 32

Oscar Nikolli was the last man standing of the Cadet Boys’ contingent, and he faced Rodrigo Andrade. With both players asserting their style of play in the opening two matches, with the score at 1-1, Andrade pulled clear to take a 3-1 lead. Nikolli got one back, but couldn’t get another to send the match to a decider, as the match went the way of Andrade, 4-2.

Junior Girls
Group Stage

It was a tough opening round of the Junior Girls as Sienna Jetha started her involvement in the singles with a loss to Czechia’s Hanka Kodet 3-0. Shortly after Ella Pashley suffered the same fate in her group against Mayra Kontopoulou of Greece. She wasn’t able to convert her second match into a win either, as she fell against Andreea Baiasu of Romania, 3-1. Sienna Jetha couldn’t get into a rhythm in her second match, went went 3-0 the way of Irene Moretti of Italy, while Ella Pashley came from behind to win 3-1 against Denmark’s Fiona Overgaard.

Knockout Round of 64
Tianer Yu defeated Aleksandra Jersova (LAT) 4-2 to reach the Round of 32. The pair traded games in a tight match to see them tied at 2-2 before the English player claimed the fifth 11-4, going on to see out the match by winning the sixth 11-7.

Knockout Round of 32
Tianer Yu had a very close match against Austria’s Elina Fuchs in the Round of 32. With the score at 3-2 to Yu, Fuchs forced a decider in dramatic fashion, overturning a match point to win the sixth 14-12. The decider was significantly more one sided than the previous end, with Yu taking the spot in the last 16 after winning the seventh 11-4.

Knockout Round of 16
Tianer Yu then faced Aleksandra Bokova in a very tough test. Despite going 1-0 up, Yu lost the second 14-12, where momentum seemed to shift in Bokova’s favour. Despite getting the score line to a manageable 2-2, Bokova pressed on and Yu wasn’t able to respond, thus ending England’s participation in the European Youth Championships.

Junior Boys
Group Stage

Max Radiven was first to the table for the Junior Boys and he took on Urban Janc of Slovenia, and came away with a hat-trick of 11-7 wins in his 3-0 victory. He backed this up again in his second match against Serbia’s Nikola Miladinovic with another 3-0 win. Isaac Kingham couldn’t quite get into his flow against Romania’s Robert Podar, as the U21 National Champion lost 3-1. Jakub Piwowar was up as well, and found himself 2-0 up, but Erik Paulina of Italy produced a brilliant comeback to win at Piwowar’s expense. Abraham Sellado played out his opener in a back and forth match against Switzerland’s Lowis Vogler with each player exchanging sets up until Vogler took the fifth and final decider to take the win.

During day 2 of the group stages, Isaac Kingham lost his second of two group stage games against Matvii Tretiak from Ukraine, but Abraham Sellado was able to bounce back from the previous day’s loss to beat Cyprus’ Antreas Hadjinikolas. Jakub Piwowar suffered more heartbreak as he came away with a 3-2 loss to Israel’s Yali Mor. All three games conceded were lost in extra points, including the fifth which finished 16-14.

Knockout Round of 128
Abraham Sellado put up a good fight against Spain’s Francesc Carrera, but wasn’t quite able to muster the strength to beat the Spaniard, despite some impressive play. Elsewhere, Max Radiven avenged Jakub Piwowar by defeating Yali Mor of Israel, 4-1, with two sets going to extra points in the process.

Max Radiven lost 4-2 to Italian Francesco Trevisan as he bowed out at the Round of 64 following sixth close games. Having lost the first two, Radiven got on the board by winning the third 11-8 before losing the fourth to find himself 3-1 down. He then bounced back to win the next game 11-8 but lost the match as the Italian took the sixth game 11-9.

Oscar Nikolli & Alyssa Nguyen beat Olaf Glanert (POL) & Anastasija Zibunova (LAT) 3-1 in their opening match of the mixed doubles, and shortly after, they were joined in the Round of 64 by Pablo Ramirez Rioja & Soraya Rahmani-Walentynska who saw off Bálint Gilicz & Borbala Vass of Hungary 3-2, winning 11-9 in the fifth. Dimitar Dimitrov and Hannah Saunders couldn’t make it a trio of English pairs in the next round as they were defeated 3-1 by Belgium’s Noan Piette & Temperance Tang in a close 3-1 contest.

Mixed Doubles Knockout Round of 64
Pablo Ramirez Rioja & Soraya Rahmani-Walentynska went toe to toe with Bryan Zhang (BEL) & Anna Walter (GER), but their journey ended after a 3-0 defeat. Oscar Nikolli & Alyssa Nguyen on the other hand had better fate on their side against Austria’s Joshua Sams & Bulgaria’s Kalina Stefanova having found themselves 2-1 down as they turned the result on it’s head to progress to the final thirty two.

Mixed Doubles
Knockout Round of 32
Oscar Nikolli & Alyssa Nguyen progressed further after a solid win over Oliver Olejnik (CZE) & Barbora Guassardo (SVK). After a comfortable opening win in the first game, the opposition got one back but couldn’t put enough pressure on Nikolli & Nguyen who took one step closer in the competition.

Knockout Round of 16
Oscar Nikolli & Alyssa Nguyen’s fantastic run in the Mixed Doubles ended one step away from the quarter finals. After a tough contest against Hubert Kwiecinski & Lena Puzio of Poland, the English pair bowed out on the competition after a 3-1 score.

Girls Doubles
Knockout Round of 64
All three of England’s participants took part in the doubles, with Alyssa Nguyen & Soraya Rahmani-Walentynska teaming up, and Hannah Saunders partnering Croatia’s Lucija Novak. Neither pair was able to advance as Nguyen & Rahmani Walentynska lost out to Turkish pairing Ceren Kahraman & Elvin Kale, while Saunders & Novak missed out on advancing to Chenhao Chen & Lotta Rothfuss of Germany.

Boys Doubles
Knockout Round of 64
Oscar Nikolli & Pablo Ramirez Rioja had formed a formidable partnership in the team event, but sadly failed to make the same impact in the doubles this time around. Slovakia’s Matus Kosicky & Ratislav Svec were too strong and came away with 3-2 win. Dimitar Dimitrov teamed up with Reah Krol Shahar of Israel and faced another dual nationality pairing in Milan Vecetic (MNE) & Ivan Smiljanic (CRO). Dimitrov & Krol ended up with the win 3-2.

Dimitar Dimitrov & Reah Krol Shahar had an early start on the third day of competition where they faced Emil Ellermann (SWE) & Peadar Sheridan (IRL). With each pair taking one of the opening two games, Ellemann & Sheridan took the remaining two matches to end England’s participation in the Cadet doubles.

After splitting the opening two games 11-9, then splitting the following two, a grandstand finished commenced, which eventually ended 16-14 to Piwowar and Jetha.

Mixed Knockout Round of 128
Despite their progress from the first round Piwowar and Jetha faced tough opponents in Spain’s Luca Khidashelli & Irena Gimeno Font who dispatched the English pair in three. Also exiting the competition in the Round of 128 were Abraham Sellado and Ella Pashley who lost 3-0 to Slovakia’s Damian Floro & Emma Molnarova. Isaac Kingham (paired with Jersey’s Hannah Silcock), beat Arseni Razhchanka & Sofiya Beliasava with a 3-0 scoreline. Max Radiven & Tianer Yu made the most of their left hand/right hand combination, and became their second English pair to make it to the next stage after a smooth 3-0 win over Montenegro’s Stefan Radonjic & Anastasija Vujovic.

Mixed Knockout Round of 64
Isaac Kingham and Hannah Silcock came within a point of progression against Patryk Zyworonek (POL) & Koharu Itagaki (GER) having reached match point in the third, but ultimately crumbled to a huge comeback to exit the competition. Max Radiven & Tianer Yu were able to make it through as they came out on top of a close battle with Aleks Koren & Lana Slatinsek (SLO) which ended 3-2.

Mixed Doubles
Knockout Round of 32

Max Radiven & Tianer Yu faced Daniil Vitorski & Lizaveta Tsimashkova in the final thirty two of the Junior Mixed Doubles. After going 2-0, like Kingham and Silcock, they suffered a comeback that proved too much for them, leaving Radiven & Yu out of the competition with a 3-2 scoreline.

Girls Doubles
Knockout Round of 64
Austrian pair, Elina Fuchs & Nina Skerbinz faced Sienna Jetha & Ella Pashley in the Round of 64 and took the opener, but found themselves whitewashed 11-0 in the second. Despite this, Pashley and Jetha couldn’t quite keep this momentum going as they lost the remaining two sets required for progression. Tianer Yu & Lilou Massart of Belgium teamed up and faced Kristina Sebek & Anastasija Vujovic of Montenegro. The pairings split the opening two, but Yu & Massart pressed on and came away with the win.

Knockout Round of 32
Tianer Yu & Lilou Massart took on home athletes Leonor Gomes & Beatriz Pinto of Portugal. Going into the third 2-0 up, Yu & Massart lost the third, but bounced back again in the fourth to make it through to the last 16.

Knockout Round of 16
Tianer Yu & Lilou Massart lost to Eseniia Shirokova & Zlata Terekhova (AIN) 3-2 to exit the Junior Girls Doubles. After winning the opening game 11-5, the pair lost the next two 11-8 and 11-7 to find themselves 2-1 down in the match. They won the fourth game 11-9 to send it into a fifth. The final game was a close run one which their opponents edged 12-10.

Boys Doubles
Knockout Round of 128
Isaac Kingham & Abraham Sellado weren’t awarded a bye so landed in in the Round of 128 where they faced, and beat, Alexandros Michael (CYP) & Severin Scherer (SUI) in a close match that ended 3-2.

Knockout Round of 64
Kingham and Sellado couldn’t quite keep up their momentum from the earlier matchup, as they faced a pair of Romanian Roberts, Istrate & Podar. Despite some good play, Kingham and Sellado couldn’t convert enough chances and exited the competition with a 3-1 score. Max Radiven and Jakub Piwowar entered the competition at this stage where they faced Erik Paulina (ITA) & Lourenco Sardinha (POR). The international pairing proved too strong, and they punished Radiven & Piwowar in a 3-0 win.
