Guang Shi won two of them, reaching the semi-finals of the MD40 category alongside Thomas Guignat of France.
They met host nation pair Kim Jin Hyeok & Lee Hee Sung, who they defeated 3-2 (6-11, 11-6, 10-12, 12-10, 11-7). Having trailed twice in the match, they won the final two games to take the match and set up a final against another pair from the host nation.
The English/French duo lost out 3-1 (13-11, 10-12, 12-10,11-8) in a close contest to Lee Soo Nu & Kim Jungkyun.
Shi & Guignat almost went out in the Round of 16, where they came from 2-0 down to beat Ngai Cheuk Ming & Tang Ka Chun of Hong Kong 3-2 (7-11, 9-11, 11-7, 11-9, 11-6).
Doubles partners became opponents in the MS40 semi-finals as Shi took on Guignat. It was the player from France who took the honours however, running out a 3-0 winner: 11-7, 11-5, 11-9.
Diccon Gray, playing alongside Birgit Matthies of Germany in the XD60 category, reached the semi-finals, where they met Franz Kraus-Guntner & Brigitte Gropper of Austria. The Austrian duo came out on top with a 3-1 (5-11, 11-5, 11-4, 11-7) win.
In the consolation events, Andrea Harrison & Sarah Horsnell reached the WD45 semi-finals, where they faced Tatiana Kotserubo & Elena Tishchenko (AIN). The English pair were victorious in their semi-final but suffered defeat in the final against Shin Soo Hee (KOR) and Katrin Adamson (EST) 3-0 (11-8, 11-6, 11-3).
There was also a semi-final place for Raymond Hurst & Manoj Gandhi in the WD65 class, where they med Luiz Oyama (BRA) & Gustavo Garces (COL).
And in the WS50, Silvia Trenti got to the semi-finals, against Deepali Shital Gotadke of India, winning 3-2 (12-10, 11-7, 9-11, 6-11, 11-9) to set up a final against Kazue Kajizuka of Japan. Trenti once again coming out on the right side of a 3-2 victory (9-11, 11-2, 6-11, 11-9, 11-3).
There were also some near misses from among a strong contingent of players from VETTS who travelled to compete in the Far East.
Ray Dixon, who with Wales’ Dennis Bromage won the MD85 category in Rome two years ago, was close to winning another medal on the world stage, but went out in the quarter-finals of the MS85 category, losing 3-1 (10-12, 11-5, 11-6, 11-6) to Wang Yuanlong of China.
Lorestas Trumpauskas was unable to add a world medal to his European Championships gold-winning performance last year as he went out in the quarter-finals of the MS55 category.
It was a close-run thing against Oljeg Basaric, but the Serb prevailed 3-2 (7-11, 11-6, 11-7, 10-12, 11-9).
There was frustration for Trumpauskas too in the XD40 class, as he and Liliia Travnikova (AIN) went out in the quarter-finals 3-0 (7, 1, 7) to Kim Jin Hyeok & Young Han Mi of South Korea.
Gray narrowly missed out on a medal in the MS65 class, going out 3-0 (11-5, 11-6, 11-8) to Toshihiro Tanaka of Japan in the quarter-finals. Earlier in the competition, Gray had beaten Tanaka’s compatriot Atsushi Oshima 11-9 in the fifth in the round of 32.
In the MD80 class, Roy Norton & Brian Hill came from 2-0 down in the Round of 16 to beat Lee Tuan Yong & Terence Yan Chap Ek of Singapore 3-2 (7-11, 4-11, 11-4, 15-13, 11-5), but went on to lose the quarter-final in three to Yiu Chiu Cheung (HKG) & Guanglin Huang (CHN).
Norton, alongside Tomoko Ikeda of Japan, also missed out in the XD80 class quarter-finals, in four games to Liu Chang fa & Tan Xuerong of China.
