Tom Jarvis turned in an imperious display to win his last-32 tie 4-0 at the World Championships in Doha.

Jarvis (WR 148) saw off world No 95 Iulian Chirita of Romania, in a match in which he specialised in getting on a roll and reeling off several points on the spin.

The Englishman was 9-6 down in the first but five successive points saw him get his name on the board first.

The second had the air of a pivotal game, and Jarvis was behind for much of it, including trailing 10-7. A run of four points overturned the deficit, but Jarvis was unable to take two game points of his own before finally claiming the game 14-12.

Another run of five points from 6-3 down got Jarvis back into the third, but he had to save a game point before sealing the game 12-10.

With little to lose – and perhaps the knowledge Jarvis had been taken to a decider after leading Dang Qiu in the previous round – Chirita came out swinging and led the fourth 5-1. He also led 7-4, but that was to be his final point of the match as Jarvis swept through on a run of seven consecutive points.

Next up in the last 16 is Liang Jingkun of China, the world No 5 and fifth seed. It is something of a case of history repeating as the last time an Englishman reached the last 16, in the 2021 edition in Houston, Liang was also the opponent.

On that occasion, Liam Pitchford missed out 4-3 in a spellbinding match acknowledged by many as the best of the Championships.
