Tom Jarvis could not follow up his opening two wins as he went out in the last qualifying round of the China Smash, but Anna Hursey made it through to the main draw.
Jarvis picked up a superb win over Liao Cheng-Ting of Chinese Taipei and followed up by sinking Singapore’s Koen Pang to reach the third qualifying round in Beijing.

Liao was the second-ranked player in qualifying at 60 – 27 places above Jarvis in the world rankings.
But any notion of the draw being unfavourable was dispelled as Jarvis took the fight to his opponent and won in four games.
The first saw Jarvis go on a run of four points early on and then, from 5-4 up, win the next six to get the first game on the board.
The second was a protracted game which saw both players have chances to win it. Jarvis recovered a three-point deficit and was the first to bring up a game point at 10-9. That one was saved and so, via the timeout taken at 13-12, were three subsequent game points.
Liao had a point to take the game at 14-13 and again at 16-15, either side of Jarvis’ fifth chance before, finally, the Englishman got over the line at 18-16.
It looked as if Liao was going to take the third when he won four points from 5-5, but Jarvis fought back to level. However, Liao did get his first game on the board, 11-9.
It seemed as if the momentum had turned as Liao took the first four points of game four, which he also led 7-3. Jarvis hit back to level at 8-8 and 9-9 and then, agonisingly, saw Liao save two match points. But finally, and accompanied by a roar of delight, Jarvis forced a top edge and claimed the game 13-11 to seal victory.
Jarvis next faced Singapore’s Koen Pang (WR 139) and had to recover from losing the first game to the left-hander, who won five successive points from 5-5. Jarvis saved three game points but not the fourth, but signs of a momentum shift were there and he levelled up with an 11-4 game, built on winning the first four points and nine of the first 11.
He came from 2-0 down with a run of eight points in the third, which he took 11-5 and then closed out the match in the fourth, winning four points on the spin from 6-7 and then taking his third match point.
Jarvis faced Kirill Gerassimenko (WR 82) of Kazakhstan for a place in the main draw was was never able to get quite close enough to his opponent.
Gerassimenko won five points in a row from 4-4 on his way to taking the first 11-6 and he added the second 11-8, pulling away from 6-6 after Jarvis led only briefly early on. Five of the first six points went to Gerassimenko in the third, setting him on the way to closing out the match with another 11-8 scoreline.
Wales and GB’s Hursey got her campaign off to a good start too, as she defeated Lilou Massart of Belgium in three straight.
Hursey world-ranked 76 and the eighth seed in qualifying, was always in control as she beat Massart (WR 180) 11-5, 11-8, 11-7.
Her next opponent was India’s Diya Chitale (WR 88), and it was another controlled performance. Hursey won the first 11-9, taking charge with four out of five points from 6-6.
She trailed the second 7-6 but won the next five points, and was only behind in the third on a couple of occasions, by one point, before sealing it 11-9 on her second match point.
Hursey’s opponent for a place in the main draw was Daniela Ortega (WR 115) of Chile and after the Welsh youngster won a protracted first game, she exerted her authority to in in three straight.
The first was 17-15 to Hursey, who saw two game points saved at 10-8 and then also had the next three game points, all saved by Ortega, who then saw two of her own saved.
Hursey finally took the game and went on to take the second with four successive points from 7-7 and led throughout the third, which she won 11-5.
She faces Jieni Shao of Portugal in the round of 64 at 6.20am on Monday UK time on Table 4.
