Tin-Tin Ho reached the quarter-finals at WTT Feeder Doha, saving five match points before ultimately exiting to India’s Sayali Wani.
Wani is ranked No 243, but knocked out second seed Zong Geman of China (WR 44) in the first round, and it proved to be a tight match against Ho (WR 223).
Ho missed one game point and saved one in the first game, before taking it 13-11, but Wani was in front for most of the next two games, both of whch she won 11-9.
Ho was 4-2 up in the fourth but then found herself 10-6 down – but she saved all those match points and brought up a game point of her own with five points in a row. She then had to save a fifth match point at 11-12, before Wani got over the line 14-12 to seal her semi-final spot.
Earlier, Ho (WR 223) faced wildcard Suhana Saini of India (WR 456) in the Women’s Singles Round of 32 and saw her opponent get the first game on the board, mostly thanks to a run of five points from 6-5 down.
Ho trailed early in the second but started to get the measure of Saini and came from 8-6 down with her own run of five. Ho bettered that with a run of nine from 6-2 down in the third, and then sealed a tight Game 4 with a run of three from 9-8 down.
She next faced independent athlete Elizabet Abraamian (WR 103) in the last 16 and it was a dominant performance from Ho as she won 3-0 (11-6, 11-8, 11-2), trailing only after the first point of the match. They only other time she was nehind in a game was 1-0 in the third.
By reaching the quarter-finals, Ho secured a haul of 40 ranking points, which should lift her comfortably back into the world’s top 200.
Also in the Round of 32, England’s Tianer Yu (WR 225) was ahead all the way up to 7-5 in the first against Tan Zhao Yun of Singapore (WR 151) but plateaued as her opponent won six in a row to take the game.
The second saw Yu come from behind to lead 8-7, but again her opponent went on a run to take the game. The third say Tan romp out to a 9-2 lead but Yu fought back to close the gap to 9-5 and then 10-9 before Tan finally got over the line.
Connor Green (WR 258) took on a player ranked almost 200 places above him – world No 61 and fifth seed Ryoichi Yoshiyama of Japan, in the last 32 of the Men’s Singles.
It followed a similar course to Yu’s match, with Green never out of contention in losing in three straight (8, 8, 8), but equally never fashioning a clear-cut chance to get a game on the board.
The Nottingham teenager led 7-5 and 8-7 in the first, but his opponent took the next four points. Ryoichi was then never behind in the second, pulling ahead from 7-7 to take it.
In the third, Green led 6-1 but saw his opponent fight back to 7-7 and then win three points from 8-8 to complete his victory.
Green & Ho are through to the Mixed Doubles quarter-finals on Friday having defeated Mohammad Abdulwahhab & Aia Mohamed of host nation Qatar in three straight in the last 16.
Seeded three, the English pair will play Tan Zhao Ray & Tan Zhao Yun of Singapore in the quarters.
Tan Zhao Yun is becoming a familiar opponent for the English players, having knocked Yu out of the singles, as well as partnering Lai Chloe to defeat Ho & Yu in the Women’s Doubles Round of 16.
Ho & Yu saved four game points before losing the first 11-9, but made all the running in taking the second 11-5.
They were behind for most of the third, which they lost 11-8, but led 7-5 and 9-8 in the fourth before their opponents won three points in a row to set up a quarter-final against top seeds Qin Yuxuan & Zong Geman of China.
A trio of England players go in search of world ranking points as the WTT Feeder Doha reaches the main draw stage on Thursday.
Tin-Tin Ho, Tianer Yu and Connor Green are all seeded into the main draw and, despite the qualifying rounds being ongoing, already know their opponents.
Green (WR 258) will relish the opportunity to take on world No 61 Ryoichi Yoshiyama of Japan in the Men’s Singles Round of 32, and will have the belief he can cause an upset, having defeated Feng Yi-Hsin, the world No 55 from Chinese Taipei, at WTT Star Contender London in October.
In the Women’s Singles Round of 32, Ho (WR 223) will face wildcard Suhana Saini of India (WR 456), while Yu (WR 225), fresh from beating two top-20 Juniors in the same city at the WTT Youth Star Contender, will meet Tan Zhao Yun of Singapore (WR 151).
The two English women team up for the doubles and Tan Zhao Yun is again the opponent in the Round of 16, alongside Lai Chloe.
In the Mixed Doubles, Green & Ho are third seeds and line up against Mohammad Abdulwahhab & Aia Mohamed of Qatar in the last 15.
