Chinese opponents proved to be England’s nemesis at the WTT Youth Contender Luxembourg.

In the Under-19 Mixed Doubles, Jakub Piwowar & Sienna Jetha picked up two good wins to reach the quarter-finals, where their run was ended by Chinese duo Chen Yizhou & Xiang Junlin in four games.

Max Radiven & Hannah Silcock, who were second seeds, lost to Xu Minghao & Zhao Wangqi, also of China, in the Round of 16.

Radiven reached the quarter-finals of the Under-19 Boys’ Singles, where he was defeated 3-0 (11-4, 11-7, 11-7) by the eventual champion Liu Zihang of China. Jakub Piwowar went out on the group stage, where he also lost to Liu.

In the corresponding girls’ singles, Jetha reached the Round of 16, losing out to Liao Xiaoqing of China 3-0 (12-10, 11-3, 13-11).

In the under-15 Boys’ Singles, Pablo Ramirez Rioja (pictured above) lost 3-1 (11-7, 11-7, 9-11, 11-6) to Cui Zijun, who was the Under-17 champion.

Radiven was also second seed in the Under-17 Boys’ Singles but was drawn against Xu Minghao again in the last 16 and was beaten in three. In the same competition, Ramirez Rioja reached the last 32, going out to Ukraine’s Volodymyr Nevizhyn in three.

Jetha was unable to get through the group stage of the Under-17 Girls’ Singles, being edged out 3-2 (11-6, 5-11, 4-11, 11-9, 11-9) by Maria Ruivo of Portugal having also lost to an opponent from Chinese Taipei.

China won every gold medal available across the Under-15, U17 and U19 categories at an event which saw two other athletes from the GB pathway in action – Hannah Silcock of Jersey went out in the Under-19 Girls’ group stage, winning one of her three matches, while Gavin Yuan of Scotland lost to top seed Nathan Lam of France 3-0 in the Under-19 Boys’ quarter-finals.
