Nottingham coasted to the Senior British Clubs League, Championship division title with four wins out of four on the final weekend.

Having built up a buffer of five points at the previous weekends at their home venue, it would have taken a complete collapse for Nottingham not to take the title.

As it was, they sealed it with a 6-2 victory in the first round against Hurricane, while nearest rivals BATTS II were defeated by Perry Dale.

Nottingham were actually 2-1 down to Hurricane but won the next five matches, with doubles for Olly Cornish and Maxim Stevens – the latter finally shaking off Matthew Dodds 3-2 (11-6, 11-6, 11-13, 10-12, 11-7).

It was a 5-3 victory for Perry Dale against BATTS, with every player contributing and Harri Docherty at the double. Dale led 3-0, BATTS closed the gap to 3-2 but Dale pulled ahead again and Joseph Marlor clinched them the points by winning match seven against Jack Bennett 3-2 (11-7, 15-13, 5-11, 5-11, 12-10).

At the bottom, Woodford Wells picked up a vital win in the battle to avoid the drop as they defeated fellow strugglers Urban 5-3, coming from 2-0 down against three-player opponents for whom Alim Hirji won two matches in the fifth.

Bottom-placed Ormeau II added a point to their tally with a 4-4 draw against Ormesby II, who came from 4-2 down to snatch a point, while there was a 6-2 win for Wymondham over Finsbury which also eased their relegation worries. That match was remarkable for seeing six of the eight matches go to a fifth, including Gabriel Schogger beating Hassan El Kaakour 13-11 in the decider and Oleh Biletskyi finally besting Tianyi Yu 15-13 in the fifth.

The Saturday afternoon matches saw none of the bottom three pick up any points – Woodford Wells and Ormeau II lost 6-2 to top two Nottingham and BATTS respectively, while Urban again paid for having only three players as they lost 5-3 to Finsbury.

Hurricane overcame Perry Dale 6-2 and there was a 4-4 draw between Wymondham and Ormesby which moved Wymondham another step away from the relegation fight. The Norfolk side were 3-0 up and 4-3 down in that match before Ryan Holland secured the draw by beating Youssef Hassan in the last match. Connor Whitehead picked up a cracking 3-2 (7-11, 12-10, 5-11, 12-10, 13-11) victory over Schogger in match seven.

Sunday morning saw some tight matches, with four of the five finishing 5-3 – the exception was BATTS’ 6-2 scoreline against Wymondham.

Woodford Wells beat Perry Dale 5-3 thanks to a double from Adam Alibhai, which included a 3-2 (11-9, 11-8, 8-11, 11-7, 11-8) win over Mircea Neagu.

That moved the victors two points nearer to Urban, now up to full strength but victims of a 5-3 reverse at the hands of champions Nottingham. The three that Urban won were all in the fifth, Gabriel Achampong with two of them, including 12-10 against Olly Cornish. It was also 12-10 in the decider for Liam McTiernan against Joseph Dennison.

The other two matches saw Ormesby beat Finsbury and Hurricane defeat bottom-placed Ormeau.

The final round saw Urban and Woodford Wells competing to avoid a bottom-two finish alongside Ormeau. Woodford played Ormeau, who had won only two matches up to that point, while Urban faced Perry Dale.

When Alibhai completed his doubles by beating Christopher Allsop 3-2 (11-8, 15-17, 8-11, 11-4, 11-8, the match was poised at 3-3. But it was Ormeau who won the final two ties, Conor Nugent beating Sinan Surensoy 3-2 (11-6, 11-9, 7-11, 11-13, 11-9) and Alex Lo beating Zoltan Hosszu in three.

A point for Urban would therefore keep them out of the bottom two, and that is what they got. Helped by Joseph Marlor scratching, Hirji’s double was enough to secure the 4-4 scoreline, though Achampong was unfortunate to lose his two matches in five to Docherty and Neagu.

Nottingham completed their campaign with a 7-1 scoreline against Finsbury, completing an unbeaten season with 14 victories and four draws. BATTS II confirmed second place with a 6-2 win over Ormesby, and Hurricane finished third thanks to a 6-2 triumph against Wymondham.

Ormeau II’s Paul McCreery was not on duty at the weekend but he topped the averages with 16/16 for a perfect 100%.

Of those who played the full 36 matches, Joe Sawyer’s 28 wins for Hurricane gave him a rate of 77.78%, while Urban’s Achampong won 25/36 for a rate of 69.44%.
