England men’s and women’s teams both earned bronze medals by reaching the semi-finals at the Commonwealth Championships, losing out to hosts India in Delhi.
Both Indian teams went on to take the gold medals, beating Malaysia in both finals.
England women were defeated 3-1 by a highly-ranked India trio but acquitted themselves well and were level at 1-1 when Tin-Tin Ho won match two.
Sreeja Akula (WR 67) put India in front with a three-game victory over Jasmin Wong (WR 524), but Ho (WR 78) defeated world No 64 Yashaswini Ghorpade, also in three, to level up for England.
Syndrela Das (WR 111) restored the hosts’ advantage as she saw off Anna Green (WR 719) in three, and it was up to Ho to keep England’s hopes of reaching the final alive.
Up against Akula, Ho twice came back from a game down to level, but was edged out 11-9 in the decider as England had to settle for bronze.
The men’s team faced three opponents ranked inside the top 100 in the world and were unable to get a game on the board, though Connor Green (WR 147) more than held his own against Manush Shah (WR 40) in an 11-9, 11-9, 11-6 defeat.
World No 41 Manav Thakkar doubled the hosts’ lead as he beat Joe Hunter (WR 682) and Harmeet Desai, ranked 79, defeated the currently unranked Ben Piggott to seal overall victory.
The two England teams had made their way through two stages to reach the last four, which guaranteed bronze medals as there is no play-off for third and fourth places.
England women started their competition with a 3-0 win over Cyprus in Group C, sealed by Mari Baldwin coming from 2-1 down against Konstantina Meletie to claim a 3-2 victory.
The match against Australia was always going to be tough, but Ho gave England the perfect start with a 3-2 (11-5, 11-9, 11-13, 9-11, 11-5) triumph against Constantina Psihogios (WR 112).
World No 31 Yangzi Liu levelled it up by defeating Wong and, after Minhyung Jee (WR 59) had beaten Anna Green, Liu sealed a 3-1 win for the Aussies by defeating Ho in four.
England bounced back with a thumping 3-0 win over Bangladesh to seal second placed in the group and go through to the second stage.
They were defeated in a tough match against Malaysia in the first of their second-stage matches, as Wong lost 3-1 to Aix Xin Tee (WR 162), Ho was defeated in four by Li Sian Chang (WR 165) and Baldwin lost in three to Karen Lyne (WR 180).
They bounced back to comfortably defeat Maldives without dropping a game, with Green coming into the team for Baldwin.
They faced Singapore in their final match of this stage and it was a good 3-1 win for England underpinned by Ho’s two victories, against Zi Sian Chong (WR 509) and Janelle Chiang (WR 426) as England came back from 1-0 down after Chiang had beaten Wong in the first match. Green picked up a key win in match three as she overcame Yu Qian Rhiannon Tey in three.
England men had to dig deep to beat New Zealand in stage 1, when two wins for Green and one for Hunter ultimately saw England recover from 1-0 and 2-1 down.
Hunter lost out 3-2 (12-10, 8-11, 6-11, 11-9, 11-7) to August Xiao in the first match, but Green’s win in three against Jun Hyuk Choi levelled the match.
Shayan Siraj was then edged out 3-2 (9-11, 11-13, 11-8, 14-12, 11-7) by Eli Ho as the New Zealanders took the lead, but again Green pulled it level by beating Xiao in four. Hunter completed the win with a 3-1 (11-3, 7-11, 11-5, 15-13) victory over Choi.
England had started with a routine 3-0 win over Cyprus, with 3-0 victories for Green and Hunter and a 3-1 margin for Piggott, who sealed the match win. They went on to complete stage 1 with 3-0 victories over Zambia and Falkland Islands.
That put them into Group E for the second stage and they started with a 3-1 victory over Canada. Green defeated Max Ji in three, but Canada levelled when Laurent Jutras-Vigneault beat Hunter 3-1 (13-11, 6-11, 12-10, 11-2).
Piggott restored England’s advantage 3-2 (8-11, 11-7, 11-8, 7-11, 11-9) against Kenny Ly, and Green beat Jutras-Vigneault 3-0 (11-8, 11-8, 11-5) to seal victory.
A 3-2 defeat by Malaysia included a double for Green, winning match two against Javen Choong (WR 551) 3-1 (6-11, 11-8, 14-12 11-9) and match four against Qi Shen Wong (WR 204) 3-2 (11-7, 11-9, 10-12, 6-11, 11-8). Siraj and Piggott performed creditably but were unable to pick up that crucial third win between them.
England completed stage 2 with a 3-0 win over Maldives to set up that semi-final against India.
The individual competitions start on Thursday.
