World-Class Inspiration at the World Championships

The month began in London, where we had the opportunity to catch some of the action from the World Table Tennis Championships at Wembley Arena.

The standard of play was outstanding and some of the best table tennis I have ever witnessed live. The athleticism, speed, creativity and technical quality on display were exceptional. Equally impressive was the staging of the event itself. The venue, presentation, atmosphere and overall spectator experience were first-class and demonstrated just how exciting and professional our sport can be.

The event provided plenty of inspiration and valuable observations that will undoubtedly influence our future coach development work.

Visit to Woodfield Table Tennis Club

On my journey to the Veterans’ National Championships in Wolverhampton, I took the opportunity to visit Woodfield Table Tennis Club.

I was warmly welcomed by club member Stephen Horton and was fortunate enough to join several top veteran players who were preparing for the National Championships the following day. This provided an unexpected but very enjoyable 45-minute practice session against some high-quality opposition.

The club is a multi-venue club which has clearly built a strong identity and playing culture. One feature that particularly stood out was the noticeboards and memorabilia throughout the venue, celebrating the club’s history and providing useful information for members and visitors. The playing conditions were excellent and it was great to see another thriving table tennis community.

Veterans’ National Championships

Whilst attending the Veterans’ National Championships at Aldersley Leisure Centre, I took the opportunity to speak with numerous coaches, players and volunteers about upcoming coach development opportunities, club support and the new coaching qualifications currently being developed.

Events such as these provide a valuable opportunity to engage directly with the table tennis community and gather feedback from those working at the heart of the sport.

Return Visit to Darlington Hummersknott Academy Table Tennis Club

Later in the month, I revisited Darlington Hummersknott Table Tennis Club.

One of the main purposes of the visit was to meet the club’s new Polish coach. With experience at national level and as a former Premier League player, he brings a wealth of knowledge and playing experience to the club. Following a lengthy discussion, it is clear he will be a tremendous asset, particularly through individual coaching sessions and by providing a high-level practice environment for players.

As always, the club was buzzing with activity. Despite the challenges presented by school holiday venue changes, which meant groups were spread across multiple halls, every playing area was busy and active.

What continues to impress me about the club is the enthusiasm of its coaching team. Many of the volunteer coaches regularly attend our online CPD workshops and are constantly looking for ways to improve and develop their coaching. Their commitment to learning is helping to create an excellent environment for player development.

During the visit I also spent time working with some of the club’s emerging talent players, delivering multiball training and supporting coaches with ideas and feedback.
