Josh Bennett and Tianer Yu were double champions at the first Grand Prix of the season at Crawley.

They won the Men’s Singles and Women’s Singles respectively, while Yu won the Under-21 Women’s and Bennett the Restricted Singles.

There were also two titles for Martin Johnson, Ewelina Sychta and Chun Wai Fung, while father and son Lorestas and Larry Trumpauskas each picked up a winner’s cheque.

Each day’s play began with a minute’s silence in honour of HM Queen Elizabeth II, the patron of Table Tennis England.

Women’s Singles

Tianer Yu (pictured above, photo by Michael Loveder) enjoyed a 3-0 (11-6, 11-3, 11-4) victory in the final against Hannah Silcock. The beaten semi-finalists were Sara Williams and Mollie Patterson, the latter defeated in four (12-10, 4-11, 11-9, 11-9) by Silcock.

Men’s Singles

Josh Bennett

Josh Bennett was the victor as he defeated Radoslav Kamberov 3-1 (11-8, 12-10, 5-11, 11-8) in the final.

Bennett had required five games to progress through his semi-final against Chun Wai Fung, coming back from 2-0 down to prevail 3-2 (8-11, 7-11, 11-6, 12-10, 11-7).

Kamberov overcame national junior champion Larry Trumpauskas in his semi-final by a 3-1 (11-9, 11-9, 8-11, 11-7) margin.

Back in the last 32, Trumpauskas had faced his father Lorestas and it was a nip-and-tuck match before ‘Trumpauskas Minor’ took the match 3-2 (5-11, 11-5, 13-11, 7-11, 11-7).

Under-21 Women’s Singles

Tianer Yu

Tianer Yu had a walkover in the final as opponent Mollie Patterson was unable to compete in the final because of injury.

Patterson had defeated Scarlett Anders 3-1 (8-11, 11-7, 11-9, 11-4) in the semi-finals, while Yu got through 3-0 (8, 8, 6) against Anaya Patel.

Back in the quarters, Yu had a tough match against young Sienna Jetha, who pushed her all the way before Yu won 3-2 (11-13, 13-11, 7-11, 11-8, 11-5).

At the same stage, Anders recovered from 2-0 down to defeat Jersey’s Hannah Silcock 3-2 (9-11, 9-11, 13-11, 11-5, 12-10).

Under-21 Men’s Singles

Larry Trumpauskas edged a tight three-setter against Danny Bajwa to take the top prize. The margin was 12-10, 11-8, 11-8.

Bajwa had to overturn a 3-1 deficit in his semi-final against Isaac Kingham before prevailing 3-2 (14-12, 10-12, 8-11, 11-9, 11-8), while Trumpauskas beat Tianyi Yu 3-1 (11-7, 11-8, 6-11, 11-7).

Restricted Singles

It was a double for Josh Bennett as he defeated Umair Mauthoor in the final, the scoreline 3-1 (11-7, 8-11, 11-8, 11-8) in Bennett’s favour.

Mauthoor had a good win in the semi-finals as he overcame Richard Carden in five (11-9, 8-11, 12-10, 7-11, 11-7), while Bennett got past Gary Dodd 3-1 (13-15, 13-11, 11-8, 11-8).

Veterans’ Singles

Lorestas made sure both competitors from the Trumpauskas household took home a winners’ cheque as he defeated Zoltan Hosszu 3-0 (11-9, 11-5, 11-6) in the final.

Trunpauskas beat Rory Scott 3-1 (11-9, 14-12, 10-12, 11-5) in the semi-finals, while on the other side of the draw, Hosszu defeated Lewis Mayhew in a tight match, 3-2 (10-12, 10-12, 11-7, 12-10, 11-9).

Women’s Band 1

Hannah Silcock

Hannah Silcock and Sara Williams went the distance before Silcock, who represented Jersey at the Commonwealth Games this summer, took the title courtesy of a 3-2 (11-2, 9-11, 12-10, 8-11, 11-9) victory.

Both had won in three straight in the semi-finals – Silcock against Evelyn Pace (4, 6, 8) and Williams against Lauren Loosemore (4, 6, 5).

Men’s Band 1

Martin Johnson

Martin Johnson overcame Lorestas Trumpauskas 3-0 (9, 8, 5) to take the title. Both men had won in three straight in the semis – Johnson 7, 6, 6 against James Hamblett and Trumpauskas 2, 5, 8 over Umair Mauthoor.

Mauthoor had in the quarter-finals defeated Larry Trumpauskas in four, to prevent another father-versus-son meeting in the semis.

Women’s Band 2

Ewelina Sychta

Ewelina Sychta defeated Sally Hughes 3-1 (11-9, 6-11, 11-9, 11-6) in the final to win the Band.

It was four sets in both semi-finals too. Hughes overcame Ruby Elliott 6-11, 11-8, 11-1, 11-9, while Sychta defeated Ella Barnard 8-11, 11-6, 11-2, 11-6.

Men’s Band 2

Martin Johnson made it a double but it was less straightforward in the final than it had been in Band 1. This time he needed five games to defeat Adam Fuzes 3-2 (7-11, 11-6, 11-5, 4-11, 13-11).

It was five games in Fuzes’ semi-final too, as he staved off a comeback by Danny Bajwa to triumph 3-2 (11-6, 12-10. 3-11, 8-11, 11-9). Johnson face Hamblett once again in the semi-finals and it was a 3-0 (7, 6, 9) victory on this occasion.

Women’s Band 3

Sychta was in top form to complete a Band 2-Band 3 double as she defeated Abbie Hurley 3-0 (11-5, 11-1, 11-6) in the final.

Both semis were decided in three as well – Sychta beat Sienna Jetha 5, 6, 5, while Hurley was a 12, 10, 6 victor over Jyothi Ghanta.

Men’s Band 3

Isaac Kingham

Isaac Kingham put in a superb comeback to recover a 2-0 deficit in the final against Harri Docherty. The Ipswich youngster took the title thanks to a 3-2 (5-11, 5-11, 11-9, 11-9, 11-5) victory.

Docherty had been on the right end of five-game outcomes in both his quarter-final against Stephen Domingo and in his semi against Tianyi Yu – the latter a 3-11, 11-7, 7-11, 11-7, 12-10 victory.

Kingham needed four in his semi-final as he beat Rory Scott 5-11, 11-8, 11-8, 11-7).

Women’s Band 4

Sienna Jetha

Sienna Jetha beat Darcey Taylor 3-0 (11-8, 11-8, 12-10) to take the title. The champion had a tough ride in the quarter-finals, where she defeated Anjali Singh 3-2 (4-11, 11-6, 8-11, 11-7, 13-11) and she went on to beat Sylwia Pajak 3-0 (11-6, 11-5, 11-7) in the semi-finals.

Taylor got through a tough semi-final, getting past Lynne Trussell 3-2 (8-11, 11-5, 11-5, 7-11, 11-6).

Men’s Band 4

Tianyi Yu

Tianyi Yu was the victory as he improved on his Band 3 semi-final showing with a victory in four over Daniel Oluwamoyowa, the score in the final 11-5, 8-11, 11-6, 14-12.

Yu had recovered from 2-1 down to defeat Alix Bell 3-2 (11-9, 9-11, 7-11, 11-9, 11-5) in the semi-finals, while at the same stage, Oluwamayowa beat Jesse Bath 3-1 (11-2, 11-3, 9-11, 11-8).

Men’s Band 5

Chun Wai Fung

Chun Wai Fung was a winner in three games against Fernando Frandes, taking the title courtesy of an 11-9, 11-7, 11-7 scoreline.

Both semi-finals had gone the distance – Fung finally shook off Romain Stewart 11-9, 11-7, 10-12, 14-16, 11-7, while Frandes was a 5-11, 11-7, 11-8, 5-11, 11-8 victor over Angus Norman.

Men’s Band 6

Chun Wai Fung doubled up by claiming the Band 6 winner’s cheque thanks to a 3-0 (11-3, 13-11, 11-9) victory over Adam Palmer.

The two semi-finals were tight three-setters as Palmer defeated Anirudh Gandepalli 11-9, 15-13, 14-12, while Fung got through 18-16, 11-8, 11-9 against Daniyal Palmer, thus preventing a final between the Palmer brothers.
