GB’s Anna Hursey is a double European Under-21 champion – the Welsh teenager striking gold in both singles and doubles in Bratislava today.

Seeded third in the singles, Hursey kept up a superb run of form to defeat second seed Veronika Matiunina of Ukraine 4-1 (11-8, 11-6, 10-12, 12-10, 11-9) in the final to take the title.

Earlier, having safely negotiated the group stage, Hursey beat Koharu Itagaki of Germany in four straight in the last 16, and then needed five to get past sixth seed Nicole Arlia of Italy in the quarter-finals.

The semi-final saw a dominant 4-0 (11-7, 11-6, 11-7, 11-5) victory over fifth seed Ioana Singeorzan of Romania and then came that final and the golden moment.

The victory continues Hursey’s remarkable run of winning titles, including the WTT Feeder Manchester and three WTT Youth Contender titles, all since the start of April.

Hursey said: “I think it was a very close and tough final. I played quite well. Maybe I made a few mistakes I shouldn’t have, but I’m happy I got through it. Stylistically it was difficult for me, since Matiunina has much more experience, but in the end, I found a way.

“It’s great that I won it for Wales, because normally we don’t have so many strong results. I’m happy I could win this for Wales.”

Just a couple of hours earlier, Hursey & Mia Griesel of Germany had combined to take the title. Seeded third, they triumphed 3-0 (11-7, 11-9, 11-4) over defending champions Elena Zaharia & Bianca Mei Rosu of Romania in the final.

Hursey said: “We were really good. Since we’re a new pairing, there was no pressure on us to win – we just played freely.

“Communication is the best part of this partnership. Mia’s previous experience of playing with Bianca helped a lot. We knew what to play and how.”

Mia Griesel & Anna Hursey

The pairing had started by beating ninth seeds Elise Pujol & Nina Guo Zheng of France in four games in the round of 16. In the quarter-finals, they were really tested by sixth seeds Matilde Pinto & Ines Matos of Portugal before finally coming through 3-2 (8-11, 11-5, 11-9, 6-11, 14-12).

In the semi-finals, they sunk the top seeds, Croatia’s Hana Arapovic & Ioana Singeorzan of Romania in a tight three-game match, the score 14-12, 11-9, 12-10.

England’s Connor Green and partner Mael Van Dessel of Luxembourg reached the quarter-finals of the Men’s Doubles, including beating eighth seeds Kas Van Oost (NED) & Borna Petek (CRO) in the last 16 before going out 3-2 (11-5, 7-11, 6-11, 11-7, 11-9) to third seeds Iulian Chirita & Andrei Istrate of Romania.

Connor Green

Green reached the last 16 of the Men’s Singles, despite surprisingly losing one of his opening three group matches to Alexis Kouraichi of France.

The second group stage saw Green, ranked 14th, lose in seven to Wim Verdonschot, the German 10th seed, but he recovered to beat Hungary’s sixth seed, Balazs Lei, in five.

That, combined with a victory over Hug Deschamps of France, set up a match against Darius Movileanu, the ninth seed, in the last 16, and the Romanian defeated Green 4-0 (11-4, 11-1, 11-6, 11-5).

Mari Baldwin

England’s Mari Baldwin was also competing in Slovakia, but she had no joy in the Women’s Singles, losing all three of her group matches in the Women’s Singles.

In the Mixed Doubles, Hursey & Iulian Chirita of Romania were seeded fourth but surprisingly went out in the second round, the last 32, to Miguel Pantoja & Elvira Rad of Spain, in five.

Baldwin, playing alongside Dennis Larsson of Sweden, went out in the first round to Norwegian pair Khai Noah Lam & Christine Kalvatn (NOR) in four.
