Connor Green has been reflecting on picking up two bronze medals at the European Under-21 Championships last weekend.

Green was on the verge of elimination in the Men’s Singles group stage, but bounced back to qualify, beat the No 1 seed Iulian Chirita and go on to reach the semi-finals.

He added a semi-final appearance in the Men’s Doubles alongside Mael Van Dessel of Luxembourg, securing two podium places.

Yet it had all started shakily, and the teenager admits he was lucky to get through his group having lost his first two matches – but he also believes he was able to turn it around on the back of hard work and a bit of self-belief.

“It was a very difficult group stage, I don’t feel like I felt very comfortable at the start of the tournament, and I was struggling with a few things,” he said.

“I had two matches on one day and I lost both of them, and on the following day I wasn’t really thinking about whether or not I could pass the group, I just wanted to put in a better performance. That was my main focus, and I managed to get quite lucky and go through to the next round.

“I was happy to pass my group anyway, but also felt I could keep on going further if I could keep trying to improve my level, and against Chirita (in the round of 16) I managed to play really well and got a bit lucky in certain moments as well, which favoured me.

“I took a little bit of confidence from that match and believed that maybe a few things were falling my way, and it would be possible to try and go as deep as possible.

“I was super happy to get a medal in the end, especially with how the tournament started, and to get one in the doubles as well was really good.”

With more challenges ahead on the WTT circuit, Green says his outlook won’t really change and plans to keep on working hard to improve, regardless of results.

“I just want to keep trying to improve in the practice hall, which is what I’ve been focused on doing in the last few months, and I felt like I had been playing better in the practice hall,” he said.

“Hopefully it will keep going as well as it has been going recently, but if it doesn’t, I’ll just keep working hard as well – it doesn’t really change my outlook on that.”
