Tom Jarvis has soared to a career-best world ranking on the back of his sensational run to the last 16 of the World Championships.

Jarvis climbs 61 places to No 78 in the world, an improvement on his previous high of No 97 in May 2023.

His new ranking will enable him to qualify for more competitions and be seeded into the main draw more often, helping his quest to further climb the rankings.

“It’s pretty crazy,” said Jarvis of his new career best. “I was in a tough position before the Worlds because I was always borderline for the Grand Smashes. My main goal was to win the first round to get the points to confirm a place in the Smashes.

“Now I’m knocking on the door to the main draw of big tournaments and it makes it easier to continue going up the rankings.”

Jarvis performed brilliantly in Doha, defeating three higher-ranked players, including the No 10 seed, former European champion Dang Qiu of Germany in the last 64.

That match saw him lead 3-0, only for his opponent to claw back to 3-3 and force a decider, which Jarvis won 11-8 on his fifth match point, embracing Director of Performance Development Gavin Evans in his corner afterwards.

“After I lost the fourth game, it was the most painful half-hour in my life, it wasn’t fun at all,” said Jarvis. “I think having Gav there really helped, he’s coached me since I was 13 and we work well together.

“He said when it was 3-3 that I was still in a good position and I would have taken that score beforehand. It was a nail-biter in the end!”

Jarvis’ run was eventually ended by world No 5 Liang Jingkun of China in the last 16 in a match in which he took the fight to his opponent and was beaten in six games. Liang went on to win a bronze medal for reaching the semi-finals, eliminating top seed Lin Shidong in the quarters.
