Bethany Yang and Stefen Wierszyllowski reached the semi-finals and there were quarter-final appearances for Max Radiven and Lusio Wen at WTT Youth Contender Vila Real in Portugal.
Yang (pictured above with coach Charlotte Carey at the event), was close to getting into the final of the Under-13 Girls’ Singles, but lost out 3-2 to eventual champion Lara Monteiro of the host nation.
Yang had battled back from 2-0 down, winning the fourth 13-11, but saw Monteiro take the decider 11-8.

In the corresponding boys’ category, Wen won his group and two knockout rounds without dropping a game. His run came to an end in the quarter-finals at the hands of Deyvan Lemaire of France.
Brothers Stefan and Ignacy Wierszyllowski, at their first WTT event, went out in the group stage, but both picked up two victories in the group stage in the Under-11 Boys’ Singles.
For Stefan, that was enough to put him into the semi-finals, finishing second in his group on countback, having defeated Junior Aruna of Nigeria – son of Quadri, current world No 34. Ignacy finished third in his five-player group.
In the semi-finals, Stefan came up against Daniel Dias of the host nation, who won in three straight.

In the Under-17 Boys’ Singles, Radiven topped his group and then defeated two more opponents to set up a quarter-final against France’s Sandro Cavaille, ranked 76 places above him at No 159 on the Junior list. Radiven twice led, but Cavaille fought back both times and then won the decider 11-9.
Abraham Sellado also won his group and continued through the round of 32, but faced third seed Dario Salcedo of Spain in the last 16. Salcedo, ranked 96 places above Sellado at No 114, took the win in four games.
Kacper Piwowar, the highest ranked of the English trio at No 147, went through as a group runner-up and had to play in the round of 64. He won that match but then faced second seed and world No 89 Steven Moreno of Puerto Rico, going out in three. Theo Kniep went out in the group stage.

Piwowar, Sellado, Radiven and Isaac Kingham all made it through the Under-19 Boys’ Singles group stage into Friday’s knockouts.
In the knockouts, Sellado and Piwowar were both defeated in a deciding game in the Round of 64 by lower-ranked players, but Kingham advanced against higher-ranked Matt Closset of Belgium.

In the Round of 32, Kingham went out to Noah Vitel of France, the third seed and world No 69 Junior, but Radiven, who had received a bye through the last 64, continued his run by beating Aaron Sahr of Luxembourg, ranked 113 places above him at No 122.
His run ended in the last 16, losing out in three to Luca Khidasheli of Spain.
Ella Pashley and Rachael Iles did not pick up a win between them in the corresponding girls’ category, Pashley’s defeats including to top seed Maria Berzosa of Spain, the world No 26, who then ended the run of Jersey’s Hannah Silcock in the last 16, with a 3-2 (10-12, 11-6, 11-8, 4-11, 11-9) victory.
In the Under-15 age bracket, Yang and Wen went out in their respective group stages, but Kniep had a couple of remarkable results to top his group and move into the last 32.
Having won his first match with relative ease, he took on Puerto Rico’s Owen Shemesh, ranked more than 250 places above him on the Junior list. It was a titanic struggle and Kniep came from 2-0 down to win 3-2 (13-15, 10-12, 11-9, 11-9, 15-13). Not content with that, he came from 2-0 down again in his last match, overcoming Sergio Munoz of Spain 3-2 (10-12, 11-13, 11-6, 11-5, 11-6).
Kniep defeated Julian Alto of Argentina in the last 32, before his run was ended in four games in the Round of 16 by top seed Matthew Cao of Puerto Rico.
There were also three pairs involving English players competing in the Under-19 Mixed Doubles, but only Kingham & Hannah Silcock of Jersey made it through the first round before going out 3-2 (10-12, 11-7, 8-11, 11-7, 11-7) to Nathan Doussinet of France & Elinor Davidov of Israel in the round of 16. The victors had earlier beaten Radiven & Iles in the first round, thereby denying an all-UK match-up. Sellado & Pashley also went out in the round of 32.
