Tom Jarvis exited the WTT Singapore Smash at the first hurdle as he came up against an impressive Kirill Gerassimenko.
Gerassimenko (WR 75), from Kazakhstan, had come through three qualifying rounds to take his place in the Round of 64, whereas Jarvis (WR 66) had a wildcard into the main draw.
The momentum Gerassimenko had built up was continued as he won the first four points of the match and maintained at least a two-point lead in winning the first games 11-7.
He was only behind for one point in the second game, and four successive points from 4-4 gave him the buffer to go on an win it 11-8.
Jarvis won the first three points of the third and then led 5-2. His opponent fouught back to lead 7-5 and, although Jarvis levelled at 7-7, Gerassimenko won four of the next five points to complete his victory and set up a match against third seed Lin Shidong of China, which he lost in three straight.
Anna Hursey of Wales and GB is also competing in Singapore and got through her first-round match against India’s Sreeja Akula 3-1 (11-8, 11-5, 8-11, 11-5).
She next played Kuai Man, the fifth seed from China, and started well in taking the first game 11-9, having led throughout.
But Kuai hit back, making all the running in the second (11-8) and third, leading the latter 7-0 and taking it 11-3.
Hursey was in front at points in the fourth, but Kuai took the lead at 7-6 and brought up two match points. Hursey saved them, but could not save the third as Kuai took the game 12-10 and went through to the last 16.
