Ho (WR 95) topped her group and then overcame Chen Szu-Yu (WT 144) of Chinese Taipei in the final qualifying round, having gone to a deciding game.

Ho took six points in a row from 7-5 down to win the first, but saw Chen hit back to win the second by the same 11-7 scoreline. The Englishwoman again moved in front by taking the third 12-10 on her second game point, and she had a match point at 11-10 in the fourth, only to see her opponent save it and again level. However, Ho made all the running in the fifth, going 4-0 up and pulling away to win 11-4.

She played Miyuu Kihara of Japan in the Round of 32 and came within a couple of points of upsetting the world No 26 in another five-game match which saw her save two match points.

Ho was not in the first, but hit the front from 5-5 in the second and pulled away to level. Kihara won a run of five points from 5-5 to take the third, but again the England No 1 hit back and brilliantly saved two match points as she won the fourth 12-10.

It was 5-3 to Kihara at the change of ends in the fifth, but Ho led 8-7 and at 9-9 it was anyone’s match – but it was Kihara who won the next two points to prevail and move into the Round of 16.

Ho had begun her campaign with a win in four against Romania’s Tania Plaian (WR 449) on Monday, but then lost in four to Paulina Vega (WR 130) of Chile on Tuesday. With Plaian having beaten Vega 3-1, it came down to a points countback, with Ho nervously awaiting the outcome. In the end, it went in her favour to take her through to play Chen.

Wales’ Anna Hursey (WR 34) was unlucky to be drawn against second seed Honoka Hashimoto (WR 13) of Japan in the first round and was defeated 3-0 (11-9, 11-2, 11-5).

Earlier in the competition, Jarvis won the ‘battle of England’ as he beat Green 11-9 in a deciding fifth game. With both men having beaten Aleksandar Jakimovski (WR 999) of the host nation and lost to Laurens Devos (WR 184) of Belgium, who topped the group, there was only pride riding on the result as neither could advance to the knockout stage.

But it was an entertaining match which saw Green (WR 156) twice lead, only for Jarvis (WR 60) to peg him back. The England No 1 led the decider 3-0 when Green took his timeout, and the younger player then recovered from 4-0 down to 5-5.

But Jarvis took the next three points to open up some daylight again, and he brought up four match points. Green saved two on his serve and then took the next point, prompting the Jarvis timeout. The next serve by Jarvis proved unreturnable and it was Jarvis’ match.

Earlier, Green’s defeat to Devos was in a decider, having twice recovered from a game down to level.

Andrew Baggaley (WR 916) was also competing in the competition and, having lost to Cedric Nuytinck of Belgium in his first match and Darius Movileanu of Romania in his second, withdrew from his final Group 7 match against Satoshi Aida of Japan.

National champions Jarvis & Green teamed up in the Men’s Doubles, where they faced Angel Naranjo & Steven Moreno of Puerto Rico in the qualifying round.

They registered a routine 3-0 (11-6, 11-2, 11-9) victory to set up a last-16 clash against Yuta Tanaka & Hiromu Kobayashi of Japan, which they also won 3-0.

The English pair surged through the first game 11-2, but had to save a game point before winning the second 12-10.

The third saw them recover from 5-2 down to take the lead, and although their opponents battled back to level at 9-9, Jarvis & Green won the next two points to clinch the match.

They next had a crack at the top seeds Lim Jonghoon & Oh Junsung of South Korea and, after losing the first 11-9 having led 8-3, they levelled by taking the second 12-10 on their second game point.

The Koreans won five points in a row from 7-6 down in the third and then made all the running in the fourth, which they won 11-5 to move into the semi-finals.

Green & Ho, who together made history in winning the WTT Feeder Dusseldorf Mixed Doubles title in March, were seeded into the last 16, where they faced Japanese pair Maharu Yoshimura & Satsuki Odo.

At 9-9 in the first, the Japanese pair took control, winning the next two points and going on to take the match in three straight (9, 4, 5).
