The current England number one Tom Jarvis, who is sat at 51 in the world rankings, will head to São José dos Campos, Brazil, to compete in the upcoming WTT Star Contender. Excited by the prospect of re-entering the top 50 in the world rankings, we caught up with Tom, who is ready for the competition and entering the tournament off the back of some fantastic form.

Jarvis has notched some more than notable wins in recent events, which has given the Englishman great confidence ahead of the upcoming WTT event. This included a fantastic 3-0 victory over Sweden’s impressive Anton Kallberg (WR36) at WTT Star Contender Ljubljana, which was followed by a victory over South Korea’s Oh Junsung (WR31) at the recent US Smash, before losing out in a tight battle to close friend Kanak Jha (USA).

“The last two WTT events have been very good for me, with two of my best ever career wins against Anton and Oh Junsung, so I am coming in confident and knowing that if I can perform well, I will be back within the top 50 in the world.”

Jarvis’ current world ranking, 51, means he will bypass the qualification and compete in the main draw, where the likes of top seeds Hugo Calderano, Alexis Lebrun, Darko Jorgic and Benedikt Duda take the top four seeded spots.

The event takes place from 21 July, with the draw set to be released once the qualifying event is underway. You can stay up to date with the event by following the results and schedule on the WTT website.

Having been to Rio back in 2016 for his first experience of the Olympic Games, where he was selected as the Team GB table tennis reserve, Tom is no stranger to Brazil.

“I am looking forward to playing in Brazil next week, I’ve been there a few times before including with the team at the Rio Olympic Games, so I have a lot of memories there.”
