On Saturday, 8th March, the Canon Medical Arena at Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park was alive with energy and empowerment as over 150 children and young people came together to celebrate International Women’s Day. This special event was designed to inspire and engage girls and young women from local communities, spotlighting key themes such as health, sport, and future career aspirations.
The day brought together a wide range of organisations, including Table Tennis England, AHSAY Dance, Sheffield Steel Netball, Mettle, the Eagles Foundation, Sheffield Wednesday Community Programme, and the Yorkshire Cricket Board Women and Girls. Each group delivered exciting and inclusive activities, giving attendees the opportunity to try something new and discover the joy of movement and sport.
The event was about more than just physical activity. It offered a holistic approach to wellbeing, with interactive sessions and discussions focused on menstrual health, HPV vaccinations, and careers in the NHS. These sessions aimed to break down barriers and empower young women with the knowledge and confidence to make informed decisions about their health and futures.
“We know that it isn’t always easy for girls and young women to get involved in sports… Through this event, we wanted to create a safe and supportive environment where they could try new things, have fun, and learn about the wide-ranging benefits of staying active — not just for their physical health, but for their mental wellbeing too.”
From high-energy dance workshops to netball drills and cricket skills sessions, the day was a vibrant celebration of female potential. Coaches and role models from across the sporting and healthcare sectors were on hand to inspire the next generation, showing them what’s possible with the right support and opportunities.
International Women’s Day provided a unique platform to connect with girls and young women, and the event at Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park did just that — fostering a sense of community, confidence, and ambition. It was a powerful reminder that when we invest in girls today, we build a stronger, healthier future for all.
