Table Tennis England’s role-based pathway of three distinct qualifications is supplemented by a multitude of CPD opportunities for coaches, making it easier for coaches to continue to develop themselves in order to develop their players.
Coaching Assistant
4-6 weeks | £190
- Predominantly online learning
- Local in-person practical sessions shadowing
- Optional independent delivery and evaluation module for extended development
- Learners to shadow sessions and sign off from coaches
- Aims to equip aspiring coaches with the foundational knowledge, skills and behaviours required to support club and player development within a variety of participation settings.
- Learners will develop a clear understanding of their responsibilities as an Assistant Coach and how to work effectively alongside a coaching team to enhance player experience, engagement and progression.
- This qualification represents the first step in the professional coaching pathway and provides a structured progression route towards the Coach Qualification

- ndividuals beginning their coaching journey or those who wish to support lead coaches during the sessions will benefit from gaining the Coaching Assistant Qualification.
Coach
8-10 months | £499
- Blended learning journey
- Combination of online learning, placed based learning, practical in-person days, and applied coaching tasks
- Continuous support from a dedicated coach mentor
- Environment-specific to ensure real-world application
- Designed for coaches taking responsibility for planning, delivering, and reviewing player development programmes across participation and performance environments
- Learners will develop increased autonomy, technical and tactical understanding, and the ability to reflect critically on their coaching practice to drive improvement
- Building on the Coaching Assistant Qualification, this qualification supports progression towards more advanced coaching responsibilities
- How to plan, deliver and review coaching sessions and player development plans
- Apply technical and tactical understanding to support player learning and progression
- Use reflective practice and feedback to improve your coaching effectiveness
- Communicate clearly with players, parents and other coaches
- Adapt your coaching to different players, settings and stages of development
- Demonstrate professional coaching competence through practical delivery and assessment
- Coaches will also have the opportunity to specialise in environment specific modules
- Aspiring or active coaches aiming to plan and deliver sessions independently and positively impact short-term performance should register for the Coach Qualification
Head Coach
18 months | £1050
- Blended learning journey
- Combination of online learning, placed based learning
- Mentoring within the environment specific to the Head Coach
- The Head Coach Qualification aims to equip experienced coaches with the advanced knowledge, skills and behaviours required to lead, design and evaluate player development programmes across complex participation, talent and performance environments.
- Learners will develop strategic oversight, leadership capability, and advanced reflective practice to influence players, coaches and wider environments
- Building on the Coach Qualification, this qualification supports coaches in taking responsibility for long-term development, coaching teams and programme leadership, and represents progression to the highest level of the coaching pathway
- How to design, lead and evaluate long-term player development programmes
- Apply advanced technical, tactical and strategic knowledge within complex environments
- Lead and support other coaches through mentoring and programme oversight
- Use advanced reflection, analysis and feedback to drive continuous improvement
- Manage coaching environments to support performance, wellbeing and retention
- Support relationships with stakeholders within the wider club development
- Demonstrate leadership and professional competence through real-world practice and assessment
- Head Coaches play a key role in shaping the coaching culture, supporting other coaches’ development, and driving the long-term success of the environment. Coaches taking responsibility for a group of players and coaches will reap the rewards of the Head Coach Qualification
