Taking a minute to thank our army of volunteers

Across the South West, table tennis volunteers are already hard at work—tidying up the previous season and laying the groundwork for the next. Their efforts often go unseen, but they are essential to keeping the sport running smoothly. Whether it’s reviewing competition calendars, reaffiliating clubs, or organising AGMs, there’s no shortage of important behind-the-scenes tasks being tackled.

These dedicated individuals are also writing development plans, applying for funding, updating contact lists, planning recruitment drives, and registering league teams. The to-do list is long, yet it’s approached with energy and commitment. This level of dedication shows just how passionate the table tennis community is about growing and sustaining the sport at all levels.

A particular shout-out goes to Barbara Parker of the West Somerset Table Tennis League, who has served in her role for over 35 years. Her long-standing contribution is nothing short of remarkable and a perfect example of the invaluable role volunteers play across the region.

A Visit to Bristol Table Tennis Academy at SGS College

I recently had the opportunity to visit the Bristol Table Tennis Academy, based at SGS College, and I was thoroughly impressed by what I saw.

The Academy boasts a team of five highly qualified and talented coaches, all dedicated to developing players at every stage of their journey—from absolute beginners to those competing on the national circuit. Their commitment to excellence was evident not only in their technical instruction, but also in the supportive and structured environment they’ve cultivated.

Players at the Bristol Table Tennis Academy are drawn from across the surrounding area, reflecting a strong spirit of collaboration between local clubs and coaches. This collective approach to player development not only broadens access to high-quality training but also fosters a shared commitment to nurturing talent at all levels. It’s a clear sign that the regional table tennis community values growth, teamwork, and long-term development over competition between clubs.

What stood out most was the Academy’s focus on engaging young people in their own learning. Rather than simply delivering drills and instructions, the coaches actively encourage players to think critically about their development. This approach fosters independence, confidence, and a deeper understanding of the game.

The atmosphere was both focused and welcoming—professional, yet approachable. It’s the kind of environment that inspires growth and enjoyment in equal measure.

Head Coach Nick Davidson recently invited parents of players who are on the verge of entering ranked tournaments to an informative session. The goal was to clearly explain how the competition structures work, what the players and their families can expect, and how best to prepare for the challenges ahead.

By involving parents in this way, the Academy ensures a strong support system around the players, helping them navigate the transition into more competitive play with confidence and understanding. This proactive approach reflects the Academy’s commitment not only to developing skilled athletes but also to fostering a positive and informed community.

Whether you’re just starting out or aiming to compete at the highest level, the Bristol Table Tennis Academy is clearly a fantastic place to train, learn, and be challenged.
