Iβve been speaking to a number of newly formed Table Tennis Clubs over recent weeks, with aspirations to provide Table Tennis activity for a wide range of groups. So question – what makes a good table tennis club and what should we be aiming for?π
A good table tennis club typically has several key qualities that make it stand outβwhether for beginners, casual players, or serious competitors. Here’s what to look for:
π Facilities & Equipment
- Multiple quality tables: Ideally 3+ tables, professional-level e.g. 22mm top, ITTF approved, with good spacing around each table (appx 9 x 4.5m per court).
- Proper flooring: Non-slip semi sprung sports flooring (not hard or carpet). π
- Good lighting: Even lighting (led warm bright, 500lux+) without shadows or glare.
- Surrounds: To separate tables and reduce ball interference.
- Social Area: Area for parents & players to meet and relax in between play.
- Clean, accessible changing rooms and toilets.
π§ Coaching & Training
- Qualified coaches: Licensed by Table Tennis England with DBS checks, Insurance, and experience coaching different skill levels. π
- Training sessions: Regular coaching sessions for juniors, adults, beginners, and performance-level players.
- 1-to-1 coaching availability.
- Fitness and technique-focused drills.
π§ Community & Atmosphere
- Friendly and inclusive: Welcoming for all backgrounds, ages, and skill levels.
- Junior development: Strong programs for kids and teens, sometimes in partnership with schools.
- Adult league teams: Participation in local/national leagues.
- Social sessions: For casual play and community bonding.
ποΈ Events & Opportunities
- Club tournaments: Internal events to encourage competition.
- Local league matches: Competing against other clubs.
- Links to Table Tennis England events: Chance to play at a higher level. π
β Reputation & Structure
- Affiliated with Table Tennis England: As a Premier Club or Associate Club. π
- Positive reviews: Online presence (website, social media and Google maps), with good testimonials.
- Organised committee: Key volunteers running the club efficiently.
- Development Plan: Creating a Development Plan driving the vision for your club. π
- Safeguarding policies: For working with children and vulnerable adults.
