Local table tennis competitions play a vital role in the development of young players. One of our core goals is to encourage more clubs and leagues across the North West to host competitions that are accessible and appropriate for players aged U11 to U19.

A great example of this in action was the recent Cumbria 1 Star, hosted by Kirkby Stephen TTC, which used a large group format to provide extensive match play. Impressively, 22 players who had never before entered an open tournament competed alongside 14 more experienced players already active in the local competition scene.

While many cadet and junior players are attending regular coaching sessions at clubs across the region, a significant number have yet to take their first step into competitive play. This is where introductory-level competitions can make a real difference.

Why Take Part in Local 1-2 Star Open Competitions?

  • Put training into practice: These events give players the chance to apply what they’ve learned in coaching, and to test themselves against others of similar ability from across the North West.
  • Plenty of matches, sensible scheduling: Large group formats ensure players get lots of games, all within a single day and without late finishes.
  • No long-distance travel required: Local events eliminate the need for 4–6 hour round trips or overnight stays in other regions.
  • Earn TTE ranking points: Players gain valuable Table Tennis England ranking points, helping them rise through the National and County ranking systems.
  • Open up future opportunities: Progressing in the rankings can lead to invitations to regional coaching days and talent pathway programmes.
