The Isle of Wight’s annual Mountbatten Charity Tournament saw a terrific competition with 48 players entered, including 35 who travelled from the mainland.
Organised by the Isle of Wight Table Tennis Association in aid of the Island’s Mountbatten Hospice, the level of table tennis ability was extremely high and there were some excellent matches.
The best performance by an Island player came from 18-year-old Ryan Cates who reached the semi-finals after saving a match point in a thrilling five-set match against 16-year-old Jaydan Griffiths.

In the semi-finals Ryan was beaten by Matt Ware; whilst Matt Daish won through against Luke Greenfield. The final was another thrilling five-set match with Ware just holding off Daish to win the event for the second time.
It is expected that more than £2,200 is likely to be raised for the Mountbatten Hospice.

Thanking everyone for their support, Alex Rorke, IoW Table Tennis Chairman said: “Our Association is delighted to have organised this event for the fourth consecutive year. A high standard of play was clearly evident. I would like to thank all those involved with organising this tournament.”
The trophy was presented to Matt Ware by the IoW Association Treasurer, Martin Dove (see photo below). Matt said: “I look forward to this annual tournament. Everyone is very welcoming and friendly. This is a lovely event with great hospitality.”
