Abraham Sellado reached two semi-finals and Connor Green a quarter-final at WTT Youth Contender Helsingborg, losing out to young Japanese athletes.

Sellado, seeded sixth, defeated the top seed Jan Mrugala of Poland in the quarter-finals of the Under-15 Boys’ Singles in Sweden.

He faced unranked Ukyo Kobayashi for a place in the final and took the first game 11-8 to raise hopes. But, from 8-7 in the second, his opponent pulled away and Sellado had no answer as he was defeated 3-1 (8-11, 11-8, 11-1, 11-5).

In the same age group, fifth seed Kacper Piwowar went out in the last 16 to lower-ranked Mateusz Wisniewski of Poland by a 3-2 (11-2, 12-10, 9-11, 9-11, 11-6) margin. Wisniewski went on to reach the semi-finals.

Jake Davidson went out in the group stage, narrowly losing 3-2 (11-9, 11-5, 4-11, 7-11, 11-9) to Ahmed Hanifa of Saudi Arabia.

Connor Green in action in Sweden

Green was eighth seed in the Under-19s, and had to overcome a 2-0 deficit against Khai Lam of Norway in the group stage, coming back to win 3-2 (9-11, 9-11, 11-7, 11-8, 11-9).

He advanced safely through the first couple of rounds to set up a quarter-final against another lowly-ranked but very capable Japanese, Kenyu Hiratsuka. Green was always in it, but Hiratsuka took it 3-1 (12-10, 10-12, 11-7, 11-8).

Joseph Hunter and Isaac Kingham also reached the knockout stage, Hunter exiting in the round of 64 and Kingham going one step further before losing to the fifth seed and World No 32 Junior Marcel Blaszczyk of Poland, who went on to reach the final by beating Hiratsuka in the semis.

In the Under-17 Boys’ Singles, Piwowar and Sellado both went out in the round of 32 – Piwowar to the higher-ranked Jan Mrugala and Sellado to the lower-ranked Tsai Tien-Yu of Chinese Taipei.

Kingham exited to higher-ranked Erik Paulina of Italy in the round of 64, while Davidson went out in the group stage – his group included eventual champion Tamito Watanabe of Japan, as well as Paulina.

Sophie Earley on the table in Helsingborg

In the Under-19 Girls’ Singles, Sophie Earley battled through her group, losing in five to third seed and world No 23 Junior Leana Hochard of France but beating Sweden’s Betty Engstrom 13-11 in the fifth.

She was beaten in the round of 32 by Slovenia’s Sara Tokic, ranked more than 400 places above her at No 55 in the world.

Sellado reached the U15 Mixed Doubles semi-finals alongside Alexia Nodin of France. Seeded three, they won their opening two matches with ease but went out to unseeded Ukyo Kobayashi & Aoba Takahashi of Japan, who went on to lose to another unseeded Japanese pair in the final.

Piwowar & Natalia Wszolek of Poland, who together gold at the WTT Youth Contender Zrenjanin in Serbia earlier this season, were seeded fourth but went out in the round of 16 to Polish pair Mateusz Wisniewski & Wanessa Kulczycka – who in turn had defeated Davidson & Weronika Wszolek, also of Poland, in the last 32.

In the Under-19 Mixed Doubles, Green & Earley won their opening match but lost out in four games in the round of 16 to top seeds Rafal Formela & Natalia Bogdanowicz of Poland.
