Jakub Piwowar reached the main draw in two age groups and Dimitar Dimitrov reached the under-11 quarter-finals at the WTT Youth Contender Otocec in Slovenia.

Dimitrov (pictured above) won two of his three group matches and was drawn to face higher-ranked Alikhan Kamalov of Uzbekistan in the quarters. It was a close match, but Dimitrov was edged out 3-2 (8-11, 11-6, 2-11, 11-7, 13-11).

Piwowar was the only one of the three English players to get through in the under-19s, with Joseph Hunter and Toby Ellis going out in the groups.

Piwowar, currently ranked at 159, faced world No 75 Ivan Hencl of the host nation in the round of 64 and was defeated in four.

In the under-17s, Piwowar and Hunter both got through to the main draw but were respectively defeated by Poland’s Marcel Blaszczyk and Sebastian Bedoya of Colombia, both ranked below them, in the last 64.

Dimitrov, Wilson Zheng and Li Hao Chen both went out in the group stage of the under-13s, while Zheng exited at that stage of the under-15s and Chen went out in the under-11 groups.

Meanwhile, at the WTT Youth Contender Varazdin in Croatia, England-based Tianer Yu picked up a good win over world No 81 Ilona Sztwiertnia of Poland in the under-19s, before going out to world No 42 Taneesha Kotecha in a decider in the last 32.

Yu, ranked at 187, was unable to get out of the groups in the under-17s.

The boys’ events in Varazdin and the girls’ events in Otocec get under way on Friday.
