Lorestas Trumpauskas is a double European champion after winning both singles and doubles titles at the European Veterans’ Championships in Serbia.

June Nelson & Susan Felstead also topped the podium and Ray Dixon & partner Dennis Bromage of Wales added the European title to their World Masters gold.

There was also a healthy collection of silver and bronze medals, plus consolation medals, for the English contingent among more than 2,500 competitors in Novi Sad.

Trumpauskas defeated Sweden’s Lars Mattsson 3-1 (12-10, 11-8, 8-11, 11-4) to win the MS55 category and teamed up with Sandijs Vasiljevs of Latvia to take MD55 gold with a 3-0 (11-9, 11-7, 11-9) final victory over Attila & Krisztian Szabo of Hungary.

Nelson & Felstead are WD80 champions, having defeated Kari Solveig Gjengedal of Norway & Heidi Wunner of Germany 3-0 (12-10, 16-14, 11-7) in the final.

There was a bronze medal in the same category for Margaret Dignum who, alongside Monika Maul of Sweden, was defeated 3-1 (7-11, 13-11, 11-8, 11-6) by Nelson & Felstead in the semi-finals.

Dixon & Bromage, meanwhile, won their gold in the MD85 category, beating the Latvia-Poland combination Gunars Jekabsons & Adam Hnyda 3-1 (11-6, 9-11, 11-3, 11-6) in the final.

There was a silver medal for Victor Guang Shi alongside Thomas Guignat of France in the MD40 category, losing out 3-0 (5, 5, 5) to Lucian Filimon & Julien Pietropaoli of France.

Paul Giles & Paul Whiting earned silver in the MD60 class, losing out 3-0 (11-7, 14-12, 11-6) to Miklos Nagy of Hungary & neutral athlete Evgenii Katselenbogen in the final.

Phil Snelson & Ivan Lewis were also on the podium in the same category, having lost 3-1 (11-8, 12-14, 11-2, 11-5) to Nagy & Katselenbogen in the semi-finals.

Giles & Whiting won their semi-final 3-2 (10-12, 11-9, 9-11, 11-6, 11-7) against Jens Norden (SUI) & Olaf Kohler (GER) – who themselves had come from 2-0 down to win in five against Ritchie Venner & Tim Dyson in the quarter-finals.

There was bronze in the MD65 category for Clive Carthy with Savas Ertufan of Turkey, losing to Ove Johansson & Dan Lagerlof (SWE) 3-1 (11-9, 12-10, 11-13, 11-6) in the semi-finals.

Nigel Eckersley & Petr Polak of Czechia lost their MD70 semi-final to Reinhard Sorger (AUT) & Roger Sundqvist (SWE) 3-2 (3-11, 6-11, 11-4, 11-6, 11-9).

And bronze also went to Linda Simpson in the WS75 class – she was beaten 3-1 (11-5, 11-8, 9-11, 11-6) by Rita Pogosova of Italy.

There were consolation gold medals for Sarah Horsnell, who defeated Germany’s Barbara Reschberger 3-1 (8-11, 14-12, 11-7, 11-5) in the final, and for Diccon Gray & Stephen Horton in the MD60s, beating Lyubomir Yanakiev & Rosen Rachev of Bulgaria 3-0 (13-11, 11-3, 11-8).

June Nelson lost the WS80 consolation final to Ruth Schneider of Germany 3-1 (5-11, 11-8, 11-8, 11-9), while in the WD75 category, Carol Cowie & Marie Paule Casajus (FRA) lost out to Elvira Herrmann & Ingrid Schirach (GER) 3-1 (5-11, 11-9, 12-10, 11-9).

Consolation bronzes were won by Paul Martindill (MS60), Umit Kaya (MS55), Radovan Zivkovic (MS55), Margaret Dignum (WS80) and Jacqueline Channell & Norma Millward (WD75) – who lost to Cowie & Casajus in the semi-finals.
