Dimitar Dimitrov’s semi-final appearance was the best result of the English competitors at the WTT Youth Contender Platja D’aro in Spain.
Third seed Dimitrov got through his Under-13 Boys’ Singles group with ease but had to battle past Joan Granados of the host nation 3-2 (10-12, 11-5, 10-12, 11-5, 11-6) in the last 16.
Having defeated Marcos Gomez, also of Spain, in four in the quarter-finals, Dimitrov’s run was ended by top seed and eventual champion Koh Wei Yeow of Malaysia, who won their semi-final 3-0 (12-10, 11-9, 11-4).
Dimitrov reached the last 32 of the Under-15s, losing out 3-1 (7-11, 11-9, 11-6, 11-6) to Ong Khai Chen of Malaysia. At the same stage, Pablo Ramirez Rioja was edged out by Spain’s Roger Quesada 3-2 (8-11, 11-4, 9-11, 11-5, 11-8).
Isaac Kingham (pictured above) reached the last 16 of the Under-17 Boys’ Singles, losing in three close games to the higher-ranked Ladimir Mayorov of Spain, having beaten the higher-ranked Hong Yu Tey (MAS) 3-2 (11-6, 11-7, 10-12, 7-11, 11-8) in the previous round.
Rohan Dani went out in the last 32 to lower-ranked Jaska Krivokapic of Montenegro in the last 32, while Kacper Piwowar went out to higher-ranked Kacper Perkowski of Poland in the last 64.
Dani reached the last 32 of the Under-19 Boys’ Singles, going out to the world No 34 Junior Daniel Berzosa of Spain.
Piwowar went out in the last 64 to Hong Yu Tey of Malaysia, ranked just below him, while Kingham went out in the group stage – losing to both Berzosa and Tey.
Lusio Wen did not make it through the group stage in the Under-11s or Under-13s, but he picked up one victory in the younger age group and missed out 11-9 in the fifth against Evan Diaz of Spain in the older.
In the Under-19 Mixed Doubles, Dani & Hardee Patel of India lost out in three in the first round to Luxembourg’s Philip Theisen & Lowri Hurd of Wales.
Dimitrov & Matilde Sousa of Portugal were beaten in four in the Under-15 Mixed by Spanish pair Tianxiang Zou & Maria Molina.
