Dimitar Dimitrov’s silver medal and a semi-final appearance for Sophie Earley were among the highlights as 16 young English players made their first international appearances of the year.

There were also some eye-catching individual results and a silver medal for GB Start squad member Peadar Sheridan of Ireland at the WTT Youth Contender Linz in Austria.

Dimitrov reached the final of the Under-11 Boys’ Singles, losing out to Pietro Campagna of Italy by a 3-1 (15-13, 9-11, 11-5, 11-8) scoreline. Dimitrov is pictured left in the above photo from the final.

Dimitrov, seeded second, earlier beat the top seed, Louis Fegerl of the host nation, 3-2 (9-11, 12-10, 11-7, 8-11, 11-9). Fegerl is ranked more than 200 places above Dimitrov at 436 on the Junior world rankings.

In the same age group, Li Hao Chen reached the semi-finals, where he led 2-0 before Campagna recovered to win 3-2 (7-11, 11-13, 11-5, 11-4, 11-8). Jayden Chen went out in the group stage.

Li Hao Chen

Earley reached the Under-19 Girls’ Singles semi-finals. Seeded No 7, she had an incredible match in the quarter-finals, beating second seed Anna Brzyska of Poland, ranked 37 places above her at No 21 in the world, 3-2 (19-21, 11-7, 11-8, 5-11, 14-12).

It may have taken a lot out of her as she was then defeated in three in the semi-finals by No 6 seed Matilde Pinto of Portugal.

Among the other notable results was Ralph Pattison’s 3-2 (7-11, 4-11, 11-9, 12-10, 11-6) win over Portugal’s Tiago Abiodun – the European Cadet champion and Youth Top 10 winner – in the group stage of the Under-19 Boys’ Singles.

Pattison (WR 195) was beaten in the round of 64 by Ellsworth Le of Singapore (WR 236). Jakub Piwowar, Rohan Dani and Isaac Kingham all went out at the same stage, Kingham to the No 9 seed.

Connor Green reached the last 32, going out to Brin Vovk of Slovenia, who is ranked nine places above him at No 79.

In the Under-17s, Pattison this time defeated Le on his way to reaching the last 32. He was joined at the same stage by Abraham Sellado, but both were beaten by higher-ranked players, in Sellado’s case by top-100 player Patryk Zyworonek of Poland.

Adam Alibhai, Kacper Piwowar, Max Radiven, Dani and Kingham all went out in the last 64 to higher-ranked players, Jakub Piwowar lost to a player ranked just four places below him, while Jake Davidson went out in the group stage.

In the Under-15s, Kacper Piwowar had a good run to the round of 16, where he lost to Pavol Kokavec of Slovakia, who is ranked more than 130 places above him at 220 in the Junior world rankings.

Sellado reached the round of 32; Davidson, Radiven and Alibhai went out in the last 64; Zihan Lin and Ryan Goodier went out in the groups.

Goodier reached the quarter-finals in the Under-13s, where he was defeated by Kuzey Gundogdu of Turkey 3-1 (11-9, 9-11, 11-8, 11-7).

Peadar Sheridan

Dimitrov was beaten 3-0 (14-12, 11-7, 11-3) by Sora Okada of Japan in the last 16 – Okada went on to win the competition, beating Ireland’s Sheridan 3-0 (11-7, 13-11, 11-1) in the final.

Lin, Jayden Chen and Li Hao Chen all exited in the group stage.

Mixed Doubles competitions were also held at Under-15 and Under-19 levels. In the older age group, sixth seeds Green & Earley went out 3-2 (12-14, 11-7, 11-8, 4-11, 11-9) to top seeds and eventual champions Borna Petek (CRO) & Natalia Bogdanowicz (POL) in the quarter-finals. The champions had beaten Jakub Piwowar & Enisa Sadikovic (LUX) in the first round.

Sophie Earley & Connor Green

In the Under-15s, Goodier & Leeloo Vukelja (CRO) were the best performers, winning two rounds to reach the last 16. Davidson and Lin were part of combinations which reached the last 32.
