When a member of England’s squad for the Euro Mini Championships talks about “doing multiball with Pigs”, it is not a strange new drill going on at the Elite Training Centre.

In fact, it refers to the nickname of Commonwealth Championships medallist Ben Piggott, who is sharing his time and skills to help the young England players shine on the international stage.

Piggott is studying Sport Coaching at Sheffield Hallam University and regularly trains at the ETC, including before the recent Commonwealth Championships, where he helped England men win team bronze.

And he is beginning to help out with the coaching side of training camps for the younger players, sparring with them and schooling them in the movements and skills that will help them succeed.

He’s also passing on his knowledge and experience of how to cope with the pressure of competing in the melting pot of international events.

“The Commonwealths was a good experience, playing lots of good players in that type of environment,” said Piggott. “And it’s important to bring experiences back from that type of event to help the younger people.

“We’ve been doing a lot of movement exercises, both bigger and small movements, and some things around matches like serve and receive – plus interval training, because Euro Minis is a long competition. When I was younger, it was the sort of thing that I wanted at a camp.

“It’s been an interesting exercise for me because I’m normally on the other side as a player, so it’s been quite cool from my perspective to be involved in setting exercises.

“I do Sport Coaching at university, and I did a two-month placement at British Para, so it links in well with my course and it’s nice to use what I’ve learned for a specific purpose. I’ve got one year left, so I’m thinking about what to do when I’ve finished.

“It’s also nice to give back and to help the younger players to improve and get good results because I want to see England succeed.”
