Naphong Boonyaprapa and Rhys Davies advanced furthest for England in the singles competitions at the ISF World Schools Gymnasiade in France, reaching the last 16.

All eight England players qualified through the group stages, with all four boys winning their groups and the four girls all finishing second.

In the preliminary round, Olly Cornish and Erin Green went through, but Bertie Kelly, Lauren Loosemore, Samadhi Udamulla and Amy Marriott all went out.

In the last 32, Davies beat an Armenian opponent while Boonyaprapa defeated a player from Jordan. Cornish and Green lost to opponents from France and Romania respectively.

The last 16 saw Boonyaprapa up against Iulian Chirita of Romania, ranked No 5 in the world U17 rankings, and the English player fought hard before losing 3-1 (11-5, 5-11, 12-10, 11-9). Chirita went on to win the competition.

Davies faced Aziz Zarehbin of the USA and fought back from 2-0 down to take it all the way to a deciding game before going out 3-2 (12-10, 11-8, 11-13, 7-11, 11-5).

The doubles competitions take place on Saturday.
