Connor Green beat the world No 22 Junior but England’s young athletes again suffered at the hands of their Japanese counterparts at the WTT Youth Contender Sandefjord in Norway.

Green (pictured above), was seeded sixth but ended up facing third seed Wassim Essid of Tunisia in the last 32 of the Under-19 Boys’ Singles, after Essid lost in the group stage to unranked Japanese Kenyu Hiratsuka – who himself went on to reach the semi-finals.

Green put in a great performance to win 3-0 (11-8, 13-11, 11-8) against Essid, ranked 33 places above him in the world.

However, he then faced Shunto Iwaida of Japan in the last 16, and went down 3-0 (11-3, 11-4, 11-9) to an opponent ranked No 138 on the Junior list but who won both the Under-19 and Under-17 gold medals.

Joseph Hunter beat the higher-ranked Mark Usov of Sweden in the last 64 but then went out to Tsai Tien-Yu of Chinese Taipei in the next round, while Isaac Kingham (WR 341) went out in the group stage with two 3-2 defeats, including to world No 84 Noah Hersel of Germany.

In the corresponding girls’ age group, Sophie Earley (WR 489) lost in four to the world No 2 Junior Heo Yerim of South Korea in the group stage, but still qualified for the knockouts and then defeated world No 210 Lukrecija Juchnaite of Lithuania 3-2 (10-12, 11-7, 11-13, 11-5, 11-3) in the last 32.

She went out in the next round to world No 47 Junior Chen Min-Hsin of Chinese Taipei but by the very creditable scoreline of 3-2 (8-11, 11-7, 5-11, 13-11, 11-5).

In the Under-17 Boys’ Singles, Abraham Sellado was unfortunate to be drawn in the same group as Japan’s Ukyo Kobayashi, who defeated him on the way to winning the previous WTT event in Sweden but, crucially, was still unranked for this event.

He also had to face Cheng Hong Yu of Chinese Taipei and a 3-2 (11-6, 12-14, 11-9, 10-12, 11-5) defeat in that match, having lost to Kobayashi, meant he went out.

Kingham, Jake Davidson, Aarav Parihar and Jake Davidson – who pushed world No 9 Junior and top seed Benyamin Faraji of Iran in a 3-2 (11-8, 7-11, 11-5, 8-11, 11-7) defeat – all qualified for the knockouts.

Davidson, Kingham and Parihar went out in the last 64 – Davidson to Kobayashi – but Piwowar continued to the quarter-finals, winning 12-10 in the fifth in the last 32 and then defeating higher-ranked Ladimir Mayorov of Spain in the round of 16. His run ended at the hands of eventual silver medallist Kobayashi in the quarters.

In the Under-15 age group, Davidson and Parihar reached the last 32 and went out to higher-ranked opponents, but Piwowar and Sellado, respectively seeded fourth and fifth, reached the quarter-finals.

There, the theme of losing out to Japanese players continued as Sora Okada beat Piwowar 3-0 (11-4, 11-4, 11-5) and Kobayashi again got the better of Sellado, by a 3-0 (11-9, 11-6, 11-5) margin. Kobayashi went on to beat Okada in the final as Japan won all six singles competitions across the Under-15, 17 and 19 competitions.
