The name comes from heraldry. A lion shown walking with its head facing the viewer is described as passant guardant. Historically, British and French heraldry referred to a lion in this position as a “leopard”. English table tennis has retained that tradition.

The three leopards are a historic symbol of England and a distinctive part of our team’s identity. They connect today’s players with generations who have represented England before them.

Their story dates back to 1937/38, when the King agreed to become Patron of the English Table Tennis Association. The Association’s crest changed from a rose to three lions passant guardant, which became known as the three leopards.

England and Great Britain compete under different team identities depending on the event. At the Commonwealth Games, players represent England. At the Olympic Games, selected English players compete as part of Great Britain.
