New SBCL Premier Division star Leon Vlasov ended the hopes of Dimitar Dimitrov at the WTT Youth Contender Cairo.

Vlasov, who represents Canada, played for a young eBaTT side on the first weekend of the Premier Division last month.

In Cairo, he met Dimitrov (pictured above) in the last 16 of the Under-15 Boys’ Singles and it was a titanic clash which top seed Vlasov edged 3-2 (14-12, 11-4, 7-11, 14-16, 11-9). Vlasov went on to win the event.

There was not a lot of luck for the four English boys competing at the event, including Vlasov’s eBaTT colleague Max Radiven picking up a shoulder injury which saw him have to pull out of the competition after the Under-17 group stage – meaning he also missed the opportunity to play alongside Noami Coker, now representing Sierra Leone, in the U19 Mixed Doubles.

Dimitrov went out in the round of 32 in the Under-17 groups, while Janak Shah was unable to advance from the groups in both the Under-17 and Under-19 age groups.

Nishil Shah went out in the Under-15 and Under-17 groups, though he narrowly missed out in the older age group when, in the group won by Vlasov, he was defeated 3-2 (7-11, 11-8, 11-8, 12-14, 11-7) by Egypt’s Karim Abdouelenain.
