Lusio Wen was a point away from a medal at the Euro Mini Championships but had to settle for a top-eight finish.

Having battled through four group stages to reach the last 16 of the Under-12 Boys’ competition, Wen then defeated Tomas Larsson of Sweden 3-1 (11-3, 10-12, 11-5, 12-10).

In the quarter-finals, he faced Denis Fonariuc of Romania and after losing the first came back to lead 2-1.

Fonariuc fought back and the fourth and fifth games both went to deuce, Wen seeing two match points come and go before his opponent clinched it 3-2 (7-11, 11-6, 7-11, 12-10, 14-12).

Wen dropped into the play-offs for positions five to eight, but two defeats saw him end up in eighth position.

Luke Winton also had a good tournament, reaching the last 16, where he was defeated 3-0 (11-7, 11-6, 16-14) by Arthur Xian Xiao (Ile De France).

He narrowly missed out 11-9 in the fifth in his first match for positions 9-16, but one further victory saw him finish in 14th place.

England had a total of six players competing at the three-day event in Schiltigheim, France, and Amber Lemmon also reached the last 16.

In the Under-13 Girls’ category, Lemmon came through three group stages but faced the top qualifier, Michelle Wu of Switzerland, in the round of 16. It was a 3-0 (11-9, 11-1, 11-6) victory for Wu, who went on to win the silver medal.

Lemmon dropped into the positional play-offs for ninth to 16th but was unable to win a further match and finished in 16th, though she narrowly missed out 3-2 (12-14, 11-8, 11-5, 9-11, 14-12) to Eva Chalkovskyte of Lithuania in her final match.

Mindy Gao and Bethany Yang competed in the Under-12 Girls’ category and both picked up some good wins to make it through to the third group stage. However, they were unable to advance to the main draw and so dropped into the last 16 of the consolation event.

Both were defeated in the first round, but picked up subsequent wins in the positional play-offs, Yang ending in 11th place and Gao in 14th, placing them 27th and 30th overall respectively.

Malek Shamakh competed in the Under-13 Boys’ event and was unfortunate to finish fourth in his group in the first stage, beating group winner Elouan Salvat (Occitaine) 3-2 (9-11, 11-9, 11-9, 5-11, 11-7) but losing his other two matches and finishing fourth on countback.

He dropped into the consolation event, where he won three of his five group matches to end up in equal 29th in the consolation and 55th overall.
