Hosts India dominated the medal as the Commonwealth Championships came to an end in Delhi.

England were unable to add to their two team bronzes, but had a number of near misses with quarter-final appearances in four of the five individual events.

India won six of the seven golds on offer, with Malaysia second in the medal table having won the Men’s Doubles gold. Australia were third and England fourth, with Singapore the only other nation to win a medal.

Women’s Singles

The record shows India’s Sreeja Akula defeated Tin-Tin Ho 4-0 in the quarter-finals, though three of the four were close and on another day Ho could have tilted the match her way. In the end it was a 13-11, 11-4, 11-9, 12-10 margin for Akula (WR 67).

Ho (WR 77) had earlier defeated two other Indians – Kavya Bhatt 4-0 in the round of 32 and Taneesha Kotecha 4-3 (4-11, 11-9, 8-11, 11-4, 11-9, 5-11, 11-7) in the last 16.

Jasmin Wong won her group with three victories out of three and then lost out in five games to Singapore’s Zi Sian Chong in the round of 64.

Mari Baldwin and Anna Green went out in the group stage, the only win between them coming in the form of a walkover for Green against Margaret Nurse of Barbados.

Yashaswini Ghorpade beat Akula in five games in the gold medal match, while bronzes went to Syndrela Das and Sutirtha Mukherjee as India enjoyed a clean sweep of the podium.

Men’s Singles

Connor Green took the first game against second seed Manav Thakkar of India and stayed in the match throughout – and, had he edged a tight third, might have troubled the world No 41 further. In the end, Thakkar took the match 4-1 (5-11, 11-8, 13-11, 11-8, 11-6).

Green had a bye through the round of 64 and then defeated Chanul Kulappuwawadu of Sri Lanka and Snehit Suravajjula of India, both in four straight, on his way to the quarters.

Joe Hunter and Ben Piggott reached the first knockout round – the round of 64 – but both went out, Piggot taking two games off Ze Yi Yang of Singapore and Hunter going down in five games to Javen Choong of Malaysia.

Shayan Siraj beat an opponent from the Falkland Islands but defeat to Malaysia’s Choong meant he did not make it out of the group stage.

The gold medal match was a thriller between Ankur Bhattacharjee and Payas Jain of India, won 4-3 (8-11, 11-9, 7-11, 11-8, 4-11, 11-4, 11-9) by Bhattacharjee.

India had a clean sweep of the podium, with Manush Shah and Manav Thakkar the bronze medallists.

Women’s Doubles

Tin-Tin Ho & Jasmin Wong reached the quarter-finals and held their own against the fancied Indian pair of Yashaswini Ghorpade & Divyanshi Bhowmick before going out 3-0 (11-9, 11-8, 11-5).

Ho & Wong had started with a thumping win over Anjali Singh & Rebecca Scott of Northern Ireland and then saw off Yu Qian Rhiannon Tey & Janelle Chiang of Singapore in the last 16.

Mari Baldwin & Anna Green got through safely against Alisa Khalid & Paul Callaghan of Scotland in round one and then took a game off highly rated Australians Jiamuwa Wu & Min Hyung Jee before bowing out 3-1 (11-9, 11-8, 10-12, 11-4).

An all-India final was won by Syndrela Das & Sreeja Akula, beating Ghorpade & Bhowmick in four.

Bronzes went to Constantina Psihogios & Yangzi Liu of Australia and Sayali Wani & Taneesha Kotecha of India.

Men’s Doubles

Connor Green & Joe Hunter reached the quarter-finals and had their moments against Manush Shah & Manav Thakkar before exiting 3-0 (11-7, 11-4, 12-10) to the Indian top seeds.

They had earlier come through two rounds against opposing pairs from the Maldives and then Sri Lanka.

Ben Piggott & Shayan Siraj got through their first match in three close games against Chris Main & Calum Morrison of Scotland but then were unable to land enough blows against Payas Jain & Ankur Bhattacharjee of the host nation, who won their round of 16 clash 3-0 (6, 4, 4).

Shah & Thakkar reached the final but were defeated by Javen Choong & Qi Shen Wong of Malaysia.

The beaten semi-finalists, each pair winning bronze, were Harmeet Desai & Sathiyan Gnanasekaran of India and Aditya Sareen & Nicholas Lum of Australia.

Mixed Doubles

Shayan Siraj & Jasmon Wong ran into second seeds Manush Shah & Swastika Ghosh in the first round and went out in three games, though they got as close as 11-9 in the second.

Joe Hunter & Mari Baldwin, and Ben Piggott & Anna Green won their first-round matches against pairs from Bangladesh and Cyprus respectively and then went out to Indian opposition in the next round, the round of 32.

Hopes were high for Connor Green & Tin-Tin Ho after success this year on the WTT circuit, including taking England’s first gold in the discipline.

They started with a win over Northern Ireland’s Tom Colvin & Grace Looney in the first round but were then edged out by Australia’s Aditya Sareen & Constantina Psihogios in the round of 32.

The English pair twice came from a game down and, when they took the fourth 11-1 it looked as if all the momentum was with them – but the Australians rallied and took the decider 11-8.

Manav Thakkar & Taneesha Kotecha took the gold for India, beating Rui Zhe Richard Yap & Ai Xin Tee of Malaysia 3-2 in the final.

Bronzes went to Sathiyan Gnanasekaran & Sreeja Akula of India, and to Shah & Ghosh.
