Will Bayley was beaten finalist and Bly Twomey reached the semi-finals in the Para Showcase events which are being held as part of the Singapore Smash.

The inaugural Para Showcase featured 21 of the best players in men’s and women’s classes 6 and 7 – with 12 men and nine women competing.

Teenager Twomey (pictured above at the event) defeated South Korea’s Yang Bok Soon in three games in her first group match, and followed it up with another win in three against Katarzyna Marszal of Poland.

Meanwhile, Bayley won all three of his group matches in three straight against opponents from Greece, France and Thailand.

That put them into their respective semi-finals, where Twomey’s run ended in five at the hands of world No 1 Kelly Van Zon of Netherlands.

World No 1 Bayley had more joy against an opponent of the same nationality as he overcame Jean-Paul Montanus (WR 3) in four games.

That put him into the final against world No 7 Chalermpong Punpoo of Thailand, who took an early lead and went on to win in four.

“He’s always been a top 10 player,” said Bayley, “and if you’re not ‘on it’ in sport you can lose. I had a slow start in the final and didn’t get going until the third set and left myself with lots to do. I’ll be back much stronger because of this result.”

“This has been an unforgettable experience,” said Twomey, who trains with Bayley at Brighton Table Tennis Club. “I think after winning two gold medals in Italy last week it really boosted my confidence.

“I was really happy to play Kelly again. Although I didn’t win I learnt a lot and I’m looking forward to going back home and improving and coming back stronger. Kelly played an amazing match and I’m happy to get to the fifth with her.

“I have had so much fun watching the top able-bodied players and I can’t thank everyone at British Para Table Tennis enough for sending me here.”
