Jakub Piwowar reached the last 16 at the WTT Youth Contender Platja D’Aro, at which 12 English boys have competed.

Piwowar (pictured above) won his group to go straight into the last 32, where he defeated Davide Simon of Italy 3-2 (11-6, 8-11, 8-11, 11-9, 11-7).

Piwowar, ranked seventh in the competition at No 159 in the youth rankings, went out in the next round in four games to Rafael Cabrera of the Dominican Republic, ranked 197.

As well as Piwowar, six English youngsters reached the knockout rounds. Larry Trumpauskas beat Yadier Lopez of Puerto Rico – ranked 146 places higher than him at 217 – in four games in the last 64 and was then knocked out in the round of 32 by Kazuki Yoshiyama of Japan, ranked 218.

Max Radiven, Kacper Piwowar, Abraham Sellado, Isaac Kingham and Adam Alibhai all went out in the round of 64 and, with the exception of Piwowar, to higher-ranked players. Kingham was the closest to advancing as he was beaten 3-2 (7-11, 11-7, 13-11, 11-13, 11-5) by Lasse Fly-Kristensen of Denmark.

Joseph Dennison went out in the group stage, edged out by Tiago Olhero of Portugal 3-1 (7-11, 15-13, 13-11, 11-7) in the crucial match.

In the under-17s, played earlier in the competition, Trumpauskas was again beaten by Yoshiyama, going out in three games in the last 64. Ben Piggott and Felix Thomis also reached the round of 64, respectively going out to Su Yu-Lun of Chinese Taipei and Artur Gromek of Poland in four. Thomis was a particularly close (11-6, 12-14, 12-10, 18-16) defeat.

Krish Chotai, Dennison, Kingham and Jakub Piwowar went out in the group stage.

In the under-13s, Kacper Piwowar, Sellado and Radiven all went through to the knockouts, but exited at the first hurdle – in Piwowar’s case the last 32, while it was the last 16 for Sellado and Radiven. Selldo pushed the sixth seed Axel Bossis of France, coming back from 2-0 down to force a deciding game. Alibhai went out in the group stage, with one win from three matches.

The under-19s saw Thomis, Piggott, Chotai and Louis Price have a difficult time in the group stage, not picking up any wins although all were competitive.

The girls’ competitions start on Saturday, with Scarlett Anders, Mari Baldwin and Sienna Jetha competing for England.
