Liam Pitchford’s run at the WTT Star Contender Bangkok ended in the quarter-finals at the hands of China’s world No 10 Lin Gaoyuan today.

Having defeated world No 12 Quadri Aruna in three in the last 16, Pitchford was in good form going into the clash.

And while he performed well, making the slower start than his opponent in every game ultimately proved costly.

In the first, Pitchford was 4-9 down, but worked his way back to 8-9 before Lin took the next two points. The second saw the English No 1 in a worse position as he trailed 1-6, but he came back to 7-9, prompting Lin’s timeout. That worked as he brought up three game points, taking the second.

What proved to be the third and final game saw Pitchford take the first point but then trail 7-1. Again, we fought back and closed to 7-9, but Lin won the next to points to confirm his semi-final place.
