Connor Green beat one higher-ranked player but lost to two others as he went out of the WTT Youth Star Contender Vila Nova de Gaia in the group stage.

Green, ranked No 105 in the junior world rankings, started his campaign against Thibault Poret of France (WR 33) and led 2-1 before Poret shaded a tight fourth game 12-10 – although Green led 7-4, he could not engineer a match point. The French athlete then won the decider.

Green bounced back with a good 3-0 win over Samuel Arpas of Slovakia (WR 54) and faced world No 16 Nicholas Lum of Australia for a place in the knockout stage.

After losing the first, Green was 10-8 up in the second but could not seal the game as Lum came back to take it 12-10 and then won the third 11-9.

In the doubles, Green competed alongside Angel Naranjo of Puerto Rico and they had a humdinger of a match in the round of 16, saving several match points in the fourth against the Brazilian-Czech combination of Leonardo Iizuka and Simon Belik.

They eventually took that game 18-16, but narrowly missed out 11-9 in the decider.
