Max Radiven, Oscar Nikolli and Sinan Surensoy all reached quarter-finals at the WTT Youth Contender Spa in Belgium.

Radiven (pictured above) dropped only two games in reaching that stage of the Under-17 Singles, including in his last-16 tie against Belgium’s Matt Closset.

Seeded fifth, Radiven faced fourth seed Titouan Morel-Gonzales of France in the quarter-finals. Radiven is ranked one place lower than his opponent in the junior world rankings, at No 122, so a close match could be expected – and it proved to be even closer than that!

Four of the games went to deuce as Radiven was agonisingly edged out 3-2 (14-16, 14-12, 10-12, 11-7, 13-11).

Pablo Ramirez Rioja went out to top seed Sandro Cavaille of France in the last 16, and Abraham Sellado exited at the same stage to eighth seed Aaron Sahr of Luxembourg, both in four games.

Ramirez Rioja had a good win in the previous round, 14-12 in the fifth against higher-ranked Tim Escudier of France.

Surensoy reached the last 32, where he was beaten by the ninth seed Noah Tessier of France in three close games. He had made it through to the knockouts by virtue of a 12-10 in-the-fifth win over higher-ranked Spyros Sarigiannidis of Luxembourg.

Jake Davidson went out in the group stage but lost both his matches 3-2, including leading the second seed Jan Skalda of Czechia 2-0 before missing out 8-11, 8-11, 11-7, 12-10, 11-3. Nikolli also lost his two group matches, including to sixth seed Lowis Vogler of Switzerland.

In the corresponding girls’ singles, Soraya Rahmani-Walentynska won one of her three group matches but that was not enough to make it through to the knockout stage.

Nikolli and Surensoy both made it to the quarter-finals of the Under-15 Boys’ Singles. Surensoy’s run was ended by third seed Flavio De Sousa of Brazil, but only after Surensoy had eliminated seventh seed Spyros Sarigiannidis of Luxembourg in the previous round. He also beat the higher-ranked Vincent Schlotthauer of Luxembourg in the groups.

Nikolli was eighth seed and it was second seed Quentin Sandona of France who knocked him out.

Ramirez Rioja reached the last 16, losing out to sixth seed Marin Jean of France, while Lusio Wen was defeated in the last 32 by Illion Zwart of The Netherlands.

Rahmani-Walentynska made it into the knockout phase of the Under-15 Girls’ Singles, winning two of her three group matches, including against the higher-ranked Finja Hansen of Luxembourg.

She was defeated in four games in the round of 16 by Germany’s Emma Li, also higher-ranked.

In the Under-19 Boys’ Singles, Sellado reached the last 16, where he went out to the higher-ranked Nathan Doussinet of France.

Radiven, seeded sixth, was a group runner-up and was drawn to face Morel-Gonzales again. It was the same outcome, though this time in three games (9, 6, 9).

Isaac Kingham and Davidson went out in the group stage – Kingham was in the same group as No 1 seed Evan Leriche of France.

In the Under-13 Boys’ Singles, third seed Wen got through as group runner-up, having lost out 11-9 in the fifth to Andry Ramanantsialonina of Luxembourg. Wen was defeated in the last 16 by Leo Reding, also of Luxembourg.

In the Under-19 Mixed Doubles, Sellado & Eva Gao of Germany got through their first-round match against Dutch opponents, but were eliminated in the round of 16 by Erik Paulina & Manon Loth of Italy, despite fighting back from 2-0 down and winning the fourth game 15-13. The decider was 11-9 to the Italian pair.

Kingham, playing with Jersey’s Hannah Silcock, went out in the first round to Noah Hersel & Loreena Morsch of Germany.

In the Under-15s, Nikolli & Rahmani-Walentynska won their first match against a Belgian pair in three straight and were then knocked out in the round of 16 by France’s Quentin Sandona & Lulie Duchet in four.

Surensoy & Mila Niu of Germany went out in the first round to Spyros Sarigiannidis of Luxembourg & Lizett Fazekas of Croatia.
