Connor Green’s run in the under-19s boys’ singles at the WTT Youth Contender Varazdin in Croatia was ended by the third seed in a deciding game.

Green (pictured above), who comfortably won his group, defeated Kazakhstan’s Damir Sarsenbay in a decider in the last 64 to earn a tie against Kwon Hyuk of South Korea, ranked No 21 in the world.

Green, currently the No 79 junior in the world, took it all the way before going out 3-2 (10-12, 11-7, 11-6, 9-11, 11-4).

Green was the only under-19 to make it through the groups as Toby Ellis, Larry Trumpauskas, Adam Dennison, Joseph Hunter and Jakub Piwowar all went out, though all except Piwowar missed out in a deciding game in one of their matches – Trumpauskas 12-10 against world No 45 Samuel Arpas of Slovakia.

The under-17s was a busy age group, with eight English boys involved, with five of them making it through.

Of those, Green won his two group matches, as did Trumpauskas, while Hunter, Dani and Jakub Piwowar won one each. Ralph Pattison, Max Radiven and Dennison went out in the groups, Pattison edged out 12-10 in a decider by Germany’s Noah Hersel and 11-8 in the fifth by Zhai Jiale of China, the under-15 champion. Dennison missed out 11-9 in the fifth to Italy’s Nicholas Fama.

Piwowar, Dani and Hunter all won the match in the round of 128 but were then knocked out in the round of 64, Piwowar performing creditably against top seed Kwon Hyuk of South Korea despite a 3-0 (12-10, 12-10, 11-5) defeat. Dani lost to the third seed Daniel Berzosa of Spain and Hunter to seventh seed Samuel Palusek of Slovakia.

Green and Trumpauskas were given byes into the last 64 and both won their matches to move into the last 32. That was where it all ended for them, the latter going out to top-100 player Stepan Brhel and Green losing to Mykhailo Lovha of Ukraine, ranked 28 places lower than him at No 107.

In the under-15s, Pattison, Alibhai and Kacper Piwowar all won every group match and Abraham Sellado and Dani also went through to the knockout stage. Alibhai had a good 3-1 (11-7, 15-17, 14-12, 11-6) victory over Benjamin Girlinger of Austria, who at No 271 is ranked more than 500 places above him. Radiven and Wilson Zheng went out in the group stage.

Pattison and Sellado exited in the last 64, Sellado to Zhai Jiale of China, who went on to win the tournament.

Alibhai, Piwowar and Dani all won in the last 64 but could not make it past the round of 32, where Dani lost to the third seed Damian Floro of Slovakia.

Dimitrov and third-seeded Piwowar went out in the last 32, Piwowar going down 3-2 (12-14, 13-11, 15-13, 9-11, 11-6) to Kim Jihu of South Korea, who later knocked out the top seed and went on to reach the semi-finals. Sellado was knocked out in the last 16 by Atharva Nawarange of India.

In the under-11s, Dimitrov and Chen both won two of their three group matches to make it through to the quarter-finals, where both exited – Dimitrov in a fifth game to Louis Fegerl of Austria, the second highest-ranked player in the age group.
