Dimitar Dimitrov’s quarter-final appearance was the furthest any of the English contingent progressed at the WTT Youth Contender Szombathely in Hungary.

Dimitrov (pictured above), won his group without dropping a game and faced Stefan Bonchev of Ireland in the last eight of the Under-11 Boys’ Singles. He took the first game but was unable to back it up and lost in four. In the same age group, Sinan Surensoy went out in the groups.

Elsewhere in the competition, there were plenty of appearances in the knockout rounds by English players, but none could go deep into the competitions.

Larry Trumpauskas got through the group and last 64 in the under-19s, and went out in three close games in the last 32 to Leonardo Iizuka of Brazil, the under-17 champion and world No 25.

Trumpauskas also made it through in the under-17s, as did Isaac Kingham, Ralph Pattison and Rohan Dani. Max Radiven went out in the groups.

Kingham went out in the round of 128 to the higher-ranked Per Gevers of Belgium, while the last 64 was the stopping point for the other three English players.

Trumpauskas was beaten in three by Chulong Nie of Australia, who went on to reach the semi-finals despite a relatively lowly ranking in the 300s. Pattison and Dani lost in five to higher-ranked players – the former 3-2 (9-11, 11-4, 10-12, 11-4, 11-6) to Japan’s Ryussei Kawakami and the latter 3-2 (11-6, 8-11, 6-11, 15-13, 11-8) to Noa Dahlstrom of Sweden.

In the under-15s, Pattison and Adam Alibhai went the furthest, reaching the last 32 where Pattison was beaten in five by unranked French player Mathys Gremillon-Bachelet and Alibhai in three by higher-ranked Miguel Zaballos of Spain.

Radiven and Kingham went out in the last 64, while Dani, Ryan Goodier and Pablo Ramirez-Rioja exited in the groups.

In the under-13s, Dimitrov got through as group runner-up in a three-way countback, while Alibhai also progressed with three wins from four.

Both went out in four games in the last 32, Alibhai to Ireland’s Peadar Sheridan and Dimitrov to namesake Viktor Dimitrov of Bulgaria.

Surensoy went out in the groups, as did Goodier and Ramirez-Rioja, although the former didn’t miss by much, winning two of his four matches.
