The recent Brian Warne Tournament on the Isle of Wight resulted in a husband versus wife confrontation in the final.

Tim Giles reached the final partnered by promising young player Ollie Lewis, while Tim’s wife Bev, partnered by Bryce Wilson, also reached the final.

This is an unusual but interesting tournament, whereby players are partnered for doubles according to their rating, with the highest ranked player partnering the lowest, second highest with the second lowest and so on.

The two semi-finals were tough and exciting five-set thrillers in which Tim & Ollie beat Phil Stevens & Peter Clarke, then Bev & Bryce beat Paul White & Toby Payne. The final, featuring this ‘family confrontation’, will be played on the Island’s annual Finals Night in April.

This tournament came just three days after the conclusion of the Island’s annual Doubles League, with the Nitons team of Tim & Bev Giles and Bryce Wilson (once again) retaining the trophy that they won last year. Thus, a very successful and rewarding week for these three players.
