The Isle of Wight’s table tennis season is virtually over now, with no more until the Winter League starts in October.

As we look back on the past year, we see that the various tournaments have been dominated by three players – Ryan Cates, Alex Rorke and Paul Rainford (pictured left to right above) – referred to as the “Fivers” as they have each won five trophies. Here are the details:

Ryan Cates – Isle of Wight Men’s Singles and Junior Champion. Division 1 winner and winner of the Doubles and Mixed Doubles Championships.

Alex Rorke – Hardbat Singles and Doubles Winner. Summer League and Handicapped Doubles winner. Also runner-up in the Island Echo Handicap.

Paul Rainford – Division 1 winner. Over 40s and 60s champion as well as Doubles champion. Also runner-up in the Men’s singles Championships.

Paul and Ryan are team-mates but also opponents. They were partners in winning the Men’s Doubles championship and the League Division 1, but opponents in the Men’s Singles Championship, which Ryan won.

It’s been a great season for all three players. They are terrific ambassadors for the sport and always willing to pass on guidance and advice to younger players.
