This year, we were excited to launch a brand new addition to the Jack Petchey Table Tennis Programme – our Development Competitions. Specifically designed for schools new to table tennis or those with beginner-level players, this initiative aims to break down barriers and open up the sport to a wider range of young people.

Rather than a traditional tournament, these events were packed with fun, skill-based, and inclusive table tennis activities like bat and ball skills, target cups, 21, round the table, top table, and hot seat. The relaxed and engaging format created a welcoming environment for newcomers and allowed students to build confidence while enjoying the game.

Five Events, One Big Impact

Over two weeks in July, we delivered five Development Competitions across London and Essex:

  • East London – 1st July at Barking Abbey School
  • West London – 2nd July at Ade Lovelace School
  • North London – 3rd July at Tottenham TTC
  • Central London – 9th July at Haberdashers
  • Essex – 10th July at BATTS TTC

In total, over 100 participants took part – many of them picking up a bat for the first time! The light-hearted competition format encouraged full engagement from students, many of whom aren’t typically involved in school sports teams.

Teachers Back the Initiative

Feedback from teachers was overwhelmingly positive. They recognised the value of a platform that welcomes all abilities and provides a stepping stone into sport. It was also a fantastic way for schools to offer something outside the usual footballs and netballs of the school calendar.

One teacher noted how refreshing it was to see students who usually shy away from PE sessions stepping up and taking part with enthusiasm. The blend of structured activity and fun made it a hit across the board.

Behind the Scenes

Massive thanks go to our incredible colleagues – Chris C, Hyacinth, and Alfie – who made these events happen, even while working through some of the hottest days of the year in sweltering sports halls!

We’re also hugely grateful to our host venues, the school staff, and of course, the brilliant young players who brought great energy and spirit to each event.

Special shoutout to photography legend Stephen Pover, who captured one of the events beautifully – take a look at the photos here:
