Drinkhall, currently ranked at No 114, was up against No 70 Marcos Madrid of Mexico and turned the match around in the second game after losing the first 11-8.

A 7-5 lead in the second turned into an 8-7 deficit, prompting his timeout, and he later saved a game point at 9-10, but he took his second game point to win it 13-11 and then stayed in front, taking the next two 11-9 and 11-7.

He next faces Cho Daeseong of South Korea (WR 87) at 10.40am UK time on Tuesday (Table 2).

Tom Jarvis (WR 160) was unable to join Drinkhall in the second qualifying round as he was defeated in three by France’s Leo De Nodrest (WR 163). Liam Pitchford is seeded straight into the main draw.

Ho, currently ranked at 164, also had a super win over a higher-ranked opponent, Hungary’s Georgina Pota (WR 87).

Having won the opening game 11-9, Ho lost the second 11-7 and trailed 0-3 in the third when she took the timeout. It worked as she took six out of seven points from 5-7 to claim the game and led throughout the fourth, save for being pegged back to 8-8 before pulling ahead again.

She next faces Choi Hyojoo (WR 59) of South Korea in the second qualifying round at 8.55am UK time on Tuesday (Table 2).

In the Women’s Doubles, Ho & Wales’ Anna Hursey picked up a four-game win over Mariam Alhodaby & Marwa Alhodaby of Egypt. They next face Adina Diaconu (ROU) & Maria Xiao (ESP) at 6am UK time on Tuesday (Table 2).

The Mixed Doubles saw two more positive results for the English contingent and Hursey, who was partnering Pitchford.

They enjoyed a 3-1 win over Robert Gardos & Sofia Polcanova of Austria to set up a tie against Manav Thakkar & Archana Kamath of India on Table 2 at 11.15am Tuesday.

Jarvis & Ho will be particularly pleased with their 3-2 victory, from 2-1 down, against Truls Moregard & Christina Kallberg of Sweden, the second-highest ranked pair in the qualifying stage.

Their next opponents are Yiu Kwan To & Ng Wing Lam of Hong Kong, also at 11.15am (Table 1).

Pitchford & Drinkhall are seeded into the main draw of the Men’s Doubles.
