The two main events in the Cleveland Junior 4 * All-Comers Championships, sponsored by Everyone Active, were won by two Cleveland players with Zac Greenhough winning the Junior Boys’ Open Singles and Ella Pashley winning the Junior Girls’ Singles.

The Cleveland Junior Open was pleased to receive the largest entry for several years with more than 160 players from most parts of the UK.

Matches in the Junior and Cadet categories contribute to the leaderboards which provide a qualifying route into their respective age group Nationals this season. Winners are automatically invited (if eligible) and points are awarded according to how far players go in the competitions. Updated leaderboards will appear on the respective Cadet and Junior Nationals pages in due course.

Greenhough came from the third seeded position. His victories included Finley Aitken from Sussex to reach the semi-final, where he picked up best win when he defeated No 1 seed Rohan Dani of Nottingham in four games. Dani had earlier defeated Cambridge’s Kai Lun Chow by 3-1.

In the final, Greenhough defeated Lincolnshire’s Ryan Holland, who reached that stage by a victory over Harrison Hill of Essex in straight games. Holland won the first game of the final, but Greenhough took command, winning the next three by comfortable margins.

In the Junior Girls’ Singles, Ella Pashley was the top seed and came through with a victory against Cambridgeshire’s Hannah Saunders in the semi-final in straight games. In the bottom half of the draw, second seed Eva Eccles of Norfolk reached the final with a win against Lily Walters of Wales after Walters had beaten Maja Wojcicka of Scotland in the quarter-finals.  The final Pashley won 3-1, only losing the third game by 11-8.

The Junior Boys’ Open Team event was won by Archway Club from Peterborough who beat Crosby High A by 3-0. The Archway Club was represented by Kai Lun Chow and Zihan Lin with Crosby High A by Fraser Massey and Jayden Chau. The closest set was the doubles which was won 11-6 in the decider.

The Junior Girls’ Team event was won by the Grantham team of Ella Pashley and Eva Eccles who beat Wales, represented by Lilly Walters and Penny Muil, 3-0 in the final, with only the doubles needing the fourth game.

Ryan Holland, who was runner-up in the U19 event, starred in the U17 Boys’ Open Singles where he was the top seed and he won without the loss of a single game. Sixth seed Dimitar Dimitrov of Essex reached the final by beating fourth seed Zihan Lin 3-1 and the second seed Harrison Hill, also by 3-1. In the final, Holland was dominant, winning all three games by comfortable margins.

In the U17 Girls’ Singles, Hannah Saunders of Cambridgeshire won a very close final against Amber Lemmon, also of Cambridgeshire, where Saunders came from 2-1 down to win the last two games 13-11 and 11-8. Saunders was taken to five in the semi-final by Alexandra Hart of Scotland, while Lemmon beat Aadhira Prakash of Lancashire.

The Cadet Boys’ Open Singles was won by top seed Dimitar Dimitrov of Essex after a very tight final with Zihan Lin. Lin won the first two games in the final and came very close in the next three, losing both the fourth and fifth at 11-9. The second seed Lin was taken to four by Aaron Wong of Yorkshire in his semi-final while Dimitrov also needed four games to beat Ronan Lamont Tierney of Lancashire.

In the Cadet Girls’ Singles Hannah Saunders won her second event, beating Scotland’s Alexandra Hart 3-1. Hart came through with a win against Amber Lemmon in three straight games in the second round and went on to reach the final with five-setter against Charlotte Lok Chin Wong of Warwickshire.

The Cadet Boys’ Open event was won by eBaTT after a hard-fought contest with Fusion A.  Samvit Balaji was the star of the match, winning both his matches for Fusion A, while Lusio Wen and Leo Shahmurov won one each and combined to win the doubles for eBaTT.

In the Cadet Girls’ Team event, Kingborough, represented by Rabani Ahluwalia and Bethany Yang, beat Ormesby A 3-1, with the Ormesby pair of Mindy Gao and Sophie Dodds winning the doubles.

The U13 Boys’ Open Singles was won by Leo Shahmurov of Middlesex who beat Fusion player Daniel Pavia in straight games in the final. The top seed in this event, Lusio Wen, was beaten 3-1 in the semi-finals by Pavia. Shahmurov came through to the final after being taken to four games by Stefan Wierszyłłowski of Lancashire.

In the U13 Girls’ Singles was won by Isabella Xiao Xu of Kent, who beat Bethany Yang of Middlesex in straight games.

The U11 Boys’ Open Singles was won by Stefan Wierszyllowski of Lancashire who won a comfortable final against Sanav Sethi of Bedfordshire in straight games. Wierszyłłowski’s closest match was in the semi-final where he beat Tim Muil.

In the U13 Girls’ Singles the winner was Hatti Xiao of Lincolnshire who won in three games against Navya Pathak of Berkshire.

A new award for the Cleveland 4* was for a trophy presented by Referee, Dan Bullen, to recognise the contribution to Cleveland table tennis by Jose Ransome, who passed away earlier this year. Jose had been prominent within the organisation of this tournament for over 40 years. 

The award was won by Penny Muil of Wales and it was presented on a Fair Play basis similar to that of the Swaythling Club International Award at the World Championships – Jose had been a longstanding member of the Swaythling Club for more than 50 years.
