The Junior world No 3 ended Tianer Yu’s stay at the WTT Youth Contender Havirov in Czechia.

Yoo Yerin of South Korea, the top seed at the event, beat Yu 3-1 (11-8, 11-9, 2-11, 11-2) in the last 32.

Yu (WR 141) had earlier got through as a group runner-up, coming close to defeating world No 75 Nina Skerbinz of Austria before losing 14-12 in a decider, but beating unranked Emilia Byrtek of Poland.

In the last 64, Yu beat Irene Moretti of Italy (WR 178) in three straight.

In the boys’ competitions which followed, Kacper Piwowar pushed the world No 7 and eventual champion Ankur Bhattacharjee of India close in the Under-19s group stage before losing 3-0 (13-11, 11-8, 12-10).

Defeat to Ellis Matthew of Singapore meant Piwowar, currently No 215 on the Junior list, did not qualify. HIs brother Jakub (WR 253) also went out in the group stage, being beaten by two higher-ranked players including world No 28 Flavio Mourier of France.

Kacper made it through in the Under-17s, including beating Chinese player Xiao Baixin, currently unranked, 3-2 (8-11, 11-7, 11-6, 9-11, 12-10). He was defeated by Ellsworth Le of Singapore (WR 136) in the round of 64.
