Hopes squad

Introductory training squad for U13 players within the England Performance pathway.

About the squad

The England Hopes squad is our introductory training squad within the England Performance pathway, and is targeted at players aged 13 and under.

For the 2021/22 season following an initial assessment day, players will be selected on a camp by camp basis until December when a final selection for the remainder of the season will be made.

Players need to be able to demonstrate a solid technical ability (England Skills Bronze Level or above), a physical foundation on which to build and traits of their character which are vital for performance, such as:

  • Resilience – need to have a “never say die” attitude;
  • Problem solver – players who continually search to find a way in any situation;
  • Ability to concentrate and focus in demanding and challenging situations;
  • Positive attitude and determination to be better;
  • Willingness and openness to learning;
  • Strong work ethic – willing to push their capabilities and work in the “Ugly Zone”
  • Self-reliance

The programme will focus on developing more of the fundamental technical, tactical, physical and mental skills needed for the sport through the England Skills award framework and increase players and parents awareness of what performance table tennis is and what the demands of it are.

Players will also learn more on how to train effectively, how to develop other key physical and mental abilities they need to apply to their regular daily training in order to progress as well as commit to the volume of time on task back in their local training environments.
